Mangaluru, Mar 10: In view of the upcoming Assembly elections, a recent survey has identified the sensitive areas that are under the limits of Dakshina Kannada district police limits. This is done under the joint participation of officials of the revenue department and the police. A special Goonda Control Squad has been formed and operation has already begun with the purpose of controlling communal violence and illegal activities.
Verification of gun licenses has been already done and 99% of the checking is complete. Raids are being conducted on bootlegging. The operation against the rowdies, liquor sellers and communal goondas in underway, as per the information given by Dr B R Ravikante Gowda, superintendent of police (SP), Dakshina Kannada district.
Former central crime branch (CCB) inspector, Sunil Naik, who is transferred to district crime intelligence bureau (DCIB), is the inspector of this special squad. In addition, there are three police sub-inspectors and eight staff in this team. This squad was formed recently and if required, more personnel will be added to the team as per the details revealed by the SP.
412 communal goondas in the list
A list of 412 communal goondas has been prepared based on all the communal violence that had taken place in the district in the past years. Out of the 412, some are inactive now. However, nearly 300 communal goondas are found to be directly or indirectly active in the communal sensitive activities and a separate list of them is made. In this list the names of those who are instigating the violence, without actually taking part in it, are also considered.
The movement of these communal goondas is monitored and the information is gathered as to whether they are attending the police station and court regularly and also whether they are involved in illegal activities presently. A report is being prepared based on these inputs. Further action will be taken based on this report.
Police patrol system made more active
Steps are taken to make the police patrol system more active and people friendly in the district. Police personnel are asked to meet people of each and every village and ensure their attendance. The personnel are instructed to keep continuous contact with the village folks, gather the information and report each and every incident that takes place under their authority limits to the senior officers as per the explanation given by the SP.
