Udupi, Mar 2: In connection with the hacking of Naveen D'Souza to death near a bar at Kanjarkatte near Padubidri on the night of Wednesday February 28, three police teams have been formed for investigating the murder. One of the teams comprises of district crime intelligence bureau, the other one is headed by Kaup circle inspector, while the third one is of Padubidri police.
Sources however conceded that so far the teams have not been able to achieve any breakthrorugh.
Although CCTV footage of the bar was checked, the registration number of the car in which the gang of murderers arrived could not be detected. The driver of the car had brushed his vehicle against Naveen's motor bike, as a result of which Naveen as well as his friends, Gireesh and Nagesh fell down. Even as the car's engine was running, three persons got down from the car and attacked Naveen with sharp weapons, and fled, leaving Naveen in a pool of blood. The police said that the gang of attackers had four members.
Naveen, son of the late Maurice D'Souza from Santhoor village, was a driver by profession. Currently he was employed at Bengaluru and was on a visit to his native place since Saturday. The police said he had brought pork and asked his mother to cook. When his mother expressed helplessness to meet this demand as she was ill, he had assaulted his mother, it is said. It is also gathered that he then called the priest of the local church to tell him that he would be killing his mother, and asking the priest to make preparations for her burial. A neighbour, who came to know about it, had somehow rescued the lady from her son and admitted her into the Ashram run by Shirva church.
Naveen, in whose name a rowdy sheet was opened in Padubdiri station in 2015, was involved with a number of brawls and fights. In 2012, he had fought with a political leader in the same bar, followed by another fight at Bengaluru with the same leader. There are several cases against Naveen including the one concerning attack on Philip. However in this particular case, the police had failed to establish the charges with evidence.
Naveen's wife is in Israel, and his son and daughter are being brought up by their maternal grandparents. He is survived by two sisters. The police are of the opinion that those who knew Naveen well were behind this murder.
The funeral of Naveen was conducted at the church at Palimaru on Thursday. While the two children of Naveen attended it, his wife was not present, sources stated.
