Bengaluru, Feb 20: St Joseph’s Institute of Management (SJIM) Bengaluru held a grand alumni reunion on February 10. This being SJIM’s golden jubilee year, the function was well attended by alumni; some of who came back to reminisce, while others came back to see how their institute has grown.
Chief guest of the day, Fr Anthony Joseph SJ, rector, Bengaluru Jesuit Educational Society, lauded the alumni for the values they have exemplified in the business world. He also noted that the goodwill SJIM alumni have created in their respective fields over the last five decades has been the greatest advertisement for the institute.
Director, Fr Manoj D’Souza SJ gave alumni a briefing about the rapid progress the institute is making in the field of business education. This was followed with lively interactive entertainment, put up by SJIM’s current students. The alumni, management, faculty and staff also discussed how alumni could continue to network with their alma mater through the online platforms the institute has created. The reunion concluded with a sumptuous banquet and fellowship.
SJIM, located right in Bengaluru’s business district off MG Road, was established in 1968 – making it Karnataka's first-ever business school. JIM is run by Catholic priests of the Society of Jesus, known as Jesuits. SJIM’s flagship two-year full-time PGDM programme gives management students the unique opportunity to specialize in two disciplines from among finance, human resources, marketing and operations.
Faculty of the institute are from top schools such as IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bengaluru, IISc, NITIE, University of London and Boston College. Admissions to the programmes are based solely on merit. Over Rs 27 lac of financial aid in the form of merit-based scholarships was awarded to deserving students in 2017.
SJIM has extensive industry connect, where students engage with senior level managers in the industry on the most pressing topics. Past industry delegates at these events have included a nobel laureate, public policy officials and vice presidents and CXOs of Fortune 500 companies. In line with the world’s best business schools, SJIM makes sure its graduates are industry-ready through at least 15 subject-specific industry projects, apart from the summer internship.
PGDM students have opportunities for joint student activities and immersion programs with the Albers School, Seattle University, USA, an AACSB accredited business school. Further, selected students can pursue their summer internship in the United States, at the University of Central Oklahoma.
SJIM had a commendable placement rate of ninety six percent in 2016-17. It has a dedicated placement cell that manages the placement process with companies. Students are coached for placements through aptitude tests, pre-placement workshops and so on. SJIM also has a memorandum of understanding with Kanara Entrepreneurs, giving students access to some of the most successful entrepreneurs from Karnataka.
The institute sees many student-driven activities conducted by elected student functionaries. Students may use the gymnasium on-campus and are encouraged to use the ample facilities to pursue their interests in cricket, badminton, basketball, football and many other sports. The high point of SJIM’s cocurricular life is Verve, the business fest conducted for management schools across the country. In keeping with the Jesuit ethos and Roman Catholic social teaching, rural immersion programs, sustainability conclaves, Christmas outreaches, blood donation camps and walkathons are conducted so that students become aware of social and environmental concerns.
In sum, all aspiring PGDM students will do well to consider SJIM as their business school of choice.
