Mangaluru, Feb 15: There is a fear among students about learning quantum mechanics. Many come with a preconceived notion that the subject is difficult. However, it is a very interesting subject as it is the science of the very small. It explains the behaviour of matter and its interactions with energy on the scale of atoms and subatomic particles, said Bengaluru University Department of Chemistry Assistant Professor Dr Gangaperiyasamy.

He was speaking after inaugurating the two day national level workshop on the subject Computational and Theoretical Chemistry organised by Department of Post Graduate Studies and Research in Chemistry, St Agnes College (Autonomous) on February 14 at the College premises.

"Computation chemistry is one way to use technology in our lives. Workshops play an important role in a student’s life as it helps one gain more knowledge,” he said.

Computational Chemistry is used to supplement experimental studies by providing data which are hard to find experimentally. When you perform experiments you come across chemicals which are very hazardous and are responsible for environmental pollution. Keeping this in mind, the students should try finding out solutions which will protect our environment, said St Agnes College principal Sr Jeswina.

"I am happy that the PG chemistry department has rightly thought and organized this national level workshop. Hope this workshop will enlighten students on many aspects of Computational Chemistry and related subjects," she added.

Dr Geetha M Pinto, HOD Chemistry and Staff Convener delivered the introductory speech and welcomed the dignitaries. Ananya Agnihotri rendered the vote of thanks.
