Qatar: Indian Govt Urged to Lift Rice Ban

Doha Time

Doha, Jul 30:
Expatriate organisation Indian Cultural and Arts Society (Incas) has sought the intervention of the Ministry of Overseas Indians Affairs to lift the ban on export of parboiled rice from India.

The forum has written a letter to the minister of Overseas Indians Affairs Vayalar Ravi in view of the massive rise in the prices of all varieties of rice in the GCC countries since the beginning of this year.

India has imposed a ban on the export of all varieties of rice and selected varieties of basmati since January this year, following a massive rise in India's domestic demand. Since then, the rice prices in the Gulf region have shot up sharply.

In the letter, the Doha-based forum pointed out that the unprecedented hike in the rice prices had put Asian expatriates, especially those from India in considerable hardship.

“In view of the predicament being faced by the expatriates, in particular Indian nationals, we seek your personal intervention to lift the ban on the export of parboiled rice, at least to destinations in the GCC region,” Incas said.
It also said that more than 3mn Indian expatriates reside in the six GCC States.

The organisation has also pointed out that Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, is scheduled for early September and the government of India should accord top priority to the interests of the Keralites in the region during the period.

Dear Friend, I appreciate your concept and spirit. But what you mean here is rice not technology. Had it been technology then I could say good going…perfect.!! But about Rice, one thing you need to understand, specially parboiled rice is not been used by Arabs or any other nationals except Indian's residing in GCC. Even if they don’t import parboiled rice from India they are least bothered because its not their food. Problem is for Indians residing in GCC.

Dear Indians abroad, you thought that it is appropriate to request the Indian Govt. to lift ban on export of rice but have no concern about the sky high oil price ? Rice for us is like what oil is for them. Did you ever question why the oil price had to go so high causing rise in cost of living worldwide ? Its we end-users (consumers) who are getting burnt. Worrying about tomorrow, we stack commodities.

I recall an E-mail circulated by a friend - buy just 2 eggs a day, just 200 Rupees worth of petrol a day, just 2 Kgs. of rice a day - this will make the retailer difficult to contain the supply that is coming form the wholesaler. Unable to stock materiial, he will ask the supplier to slow down hence automatically the price will come down. Do not ask to sell/realease our produce for peanuts - rather demand high returns as they do for their produce !
