Kuwait City, Jul 24: Recent strikes by of cleaners in the health and education ministries as well as other public agencies on Monday are a bad omens for the country, Chairperson of Kuwait Human Rights Society (KHRS) Ali Al-Baghli told the Arab Times.

Al-Baghli made the statement in a press conference of the society on Tuesday.  Chairperson of the Freedom Committee of the society Salah Al-Mudhaf and his deputy Maha Al-Barghes attended the conference. Blaming the executive and legislative authorities for the protest, Al-Baghli said the demonstrations, staged by Asian workers, stemmed from the lackluster attitude of the two government bodies on addressing issues of the workers, who are an integral part of the national economy. 

He expressed concern over the inaction of the government to protect the workers against their oppressive employers.  He urged the two ministries to stop media maneuvering and political deals on issues that concern rights of expatriate employees.

“I condemn in its entirety the government’s connivance with those companies to exploit innocent workers by renewing contracts of such erring companies as if nothing happened, since they ignore their past violations without penalties,” Al-Baghli pointed out.

Sharing Al-Baghli’s sentiments, Human Rights Enforcement Society Chairper-son Dr Adel Damkhi pointed out “violating human rights is an affront to the Constitution, it is against the will of God and a serious desecration of human dignity, hence, it is imperative to wage war against any individual or company that refuses to pay workers,” reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.
