Puttur: Gas leakage on Shiradi Ghat after tanker overturns, traffic diverted

Puttur, Jan 10: An accident involving a tanker has resulted in a gas leakage at Shiradi Ghat here on the evening of Wednesday January 10.

The gas started leaking after the tanker overturned at Kodyakallu on the ghat section.

The tanker was plying from Bengaluru to Mangaluru.

Due to the leakage, vehicle movement has been banned for the time being on both sides of the accident spot.

Traffic is being diverted at Bantwal, from where one may take the route to Charmadi. One may also take the Mani-Madikeri route.

The ghat section where the accident took place will be closed till 7.30 am on Thursday January 11, police sources said.

The authorities and rescue teams are in the process of diffusing the gas, but the process may take sometime.

    There is a fuel pipeline connecting Mangaluru to Bengaluru going through western ghats. Is it not possible to transport LPG through those lines ? Else there is option of transporting LPG by wagons by rail . Why road tankers are used ? Something fishy. Diaster waiting to happen. Devare nive Kapadabeku.

    It looks like our fire tenders have to be trained. How long will they spray water on the tanker & what is the use of itInternational standard to extinguish Fire/Leak of gas is Chemical foam which seals the gas from combustion with oxygen in air.

    Our fire tenders are adequately trained and they are doing a great job. They are spraying the water to disperse the gas and to cool the container to PREVENT a fire from occurring and not to EXTINGUISH a fire.

    You are right when you say that Chemical foam is the preferred extinguishing media IN CASE OF FIRE. In this case, there was no fire, and our brave firefighters are working hard to prevent one from occurring. They will keep doing that till their combustible gas detector (explosimeter) gives safe readings. In cases of LPG/LNG leak, guidelines clearly state that 'Do not try to extinguish the fire if the gas leak cannot be stopped'.
