Is Indian Cricket Back to Losing Days ?

By Denzil Fernandes - Dubai

Dubai, Jul 7: Our youth are flattering to deceive.  Right now, it is a case of more defeats than wins for the Indian cricket team.  The jinx of losing crucial finals continues much to the chagrin of their well wishers and supporters.  The consistency factor is missing and the current Indian team is no better than any of their predecessors.  India’s prime position as an emerging cricket power is surely in shambles !

Immediately on the heels of their loss in the tri nation series in Bangladesh to Pakistan, the Indian cricketers promptly lost their final match against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup on Sunday in Karachi at the National Stadium.  This only convinced that the Indian team is rightly known as ‘chokers’ when it comes to crunch and decisive matches.  Winning insignificant matches does not help the team and right now the ‘think tank’ of the Indians seems to be empty with no ideas to break this so called jinx.

Under new captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni expectations have been immense and unlimited.  After their brilliant win in the T20 World Cup in South Africa where they beat Pakistan, the Indian team had been billed as world beaters by all and sundry.  This expectation has now been belied with the poor performances of the young Indian players.  The killer instinct has been missing and India is struggling to hold its prominent place even in Asia.  In the Asia Cup competition last week, India struggled even against lowly Bangladesh as well to a certain extent.  There seems to be no back up plans or strategies when the team is not doing well.

One is not too sure about the role of new coach Gary Kirsten.  He has been keeping a low profile to a great extent for reasons best known to him.  What kind of ‘pre match’ planning goes on is not known.  The Indian batsmen had no clue especially in the finals of the recent Asia Cup in Karachi when they were outbowled by Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis who took 6 wickets for only 13 runs in 8 overs !  A lot has been expected from Dhoni’s young stars like Rohit Sharma, Praveen Kumar, Piyush Chawla, Yusuf Pathan and others like them.  But unfortunately, a huge vacuum is visible in the team where some of the players are finding it difficult to find their feet on the international arena.

Just a couple of weeks ago Dhoni blamed too much cricket for their failure to perform consistently.  For a professional player, there can be no such reason as fatigue or too much cricket.  This is their bread and butter if they want to remain at the top and triumph.  It is time for Dhoni and his boys to wake up from their deep slumber and resort to sterner and tougher playing methods to keep winning.  Results is the only way by which the players will be measured and their contribution counted.  When the team fails to perform, the players have to be shown the exit door and new ones introduced.  Today, there is no dearth of talent in India and if the trusted ones fail there is no harm in trying the untested ones.  At the end of the day, when the bails are removed all eyes will be on the scoreboard and the end result.

It is time for Indian cricket to turn the tide and find winning ways quickly.

Its not good to that Rahul Dravid is not getting a place.Even Robin Uthappa is a good talent but I dont understand why dhoni is not promoting him. Dhoni should come to bat before Yuvi, Rohith Sarma is a bad choice they should have played with Yusuf Pathan as a pinch hitter as no 3 batsman.,but if he is playing Dhoni is sending him at the end...

I think Sachin or dravid shud take the place in the team in oder to handle the pressure while loosing the wickets. Because in the present team you cant find such cool customer accept Dhoni. All are young and in a hurry too. I would have wished either Tendulkar or rahul should have been in the team

no offence but you people in india i mean some of them just want india to always win. dhoni is just tying with new players and that does not mean he is selfish or any crap. time will decide everything and i think they should still keep dhoni as the ODI captain. i such a big fan of him. i hate when they do somthing like this.. well i also think they should hav some old players too.. :]

THE BCCI should realise matches are not won by winning preliminary GAMES but FINALS. we must have SACHIN, RAHUL AND SOURAV back in the team. they are the backbone. THT TOP 3 ODI BASTMAN any team in the world would boast off. DRAVID is the most dependable BASTMEN in the world.

This is one of the worst ever defeat to the Indian side considering Indian batsmen are the best players of spin... Here experience played a big role... Inspite of Indian reducing Srilanka to 67-4 the experience of Jayasooriya came into play and in the Indian batting, there wasnt a single soul willing to hang around to develop a partnership which was very vital after a terrific start given by Sehwag

Team India badly needs "THE WALL" Rahul Dravid in the team......And the idea of playing Uttappa in the X1, after benching him for the entire tournament was clueless.. Yusuf Pathan would have been a better choice given his ability to send a few overs of offspin... Lets hope the indian think thank breaks the jinx of losing finals and march towards glory.. CHAK DE CHAK DE INDIA

They should never have randomly dropped Sourav and Rahul. Too many young players brought in at once and at least one of the above should have been retained. Probably Sourav as he is a very canny bowler as well as a world class batsman. O.K. his fielding is not brilliant but then neither was that of some of the youngsters! Think again Indian Cricket Board.

Indians record moreover are the best in the preliminary round only, but in the final it was worst because tense situation always made them nervous & they give up easily, otherwise one new unexperienced bowler could not had a chance to make the difference. Atleast in this match they should have learned from Jayasurya & fought back.

Again Indians showed their ability to plan strategically. When they knew Mendis is their trump card, they didn't bother to study him and bat sensibly instead of falling prey to him. I am afraid to say these are professional cricketers!

India has bad record in not winning the finals. Out of 17 finals India has won only 2 occasions. Considering this India should have opted batting first as Indian players are always nervous while chasing specially in big match like this.

I wish dravid was there in place of Utappa Yesterday .You need a technically sound batsman in the lineup .If Dravid had not taken captaincy he would have been still in the oneday team and would have been vey helpful for India .
