Ras Al Khaimah, Jul 6: Hundreds of workers went on a rampage through their labour camp in Ras Al Khaimah on Friday night burning vehicles and destroying furniture, workers told 7DAYS. The men were angry over the quality of the food that was being served to them. They picked a fight with the camp boss, which escalated into more violent attacks from the labourers. According to an eyewitness, they beat up the camp boss, smashed the windows and destroyed furniture kept in the canteen. It is not known how many workers were injured in the melee.
Police rushed to the scene to quell the riots and took into custody a number of workers who started the trouble. Workers were later taken to Abu Dhabi and Dubai in buses.
At least 3,000 workers reside in the camp. “Workers were not happy with the food and shouted at the camp boss for not providing them with proper food. An argument broke out between the workers and the camp boss leading to the clashes. “Agitated workers set at least two vehicles that were parked there on fire,” said the eye-witness, who asked not to be named.
