Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Oct 14: Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus stands all over the state will soon be equipped with machines vending purified water at one rupee a litre soon. The facility will enable passengers as well people living in the vicinity to get access to clean drinking water, which is scarce in several parts of the state and crucial for maintaining good health.

KSRTC will provide space for installation of the machines at its bus stands while the units will be financed by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd in association with local MLAs and other people's representatives. Iniitially they will be opened in15 bus stands and will be extended allover the state soon. While Bharat Petroleum will install 30 such machines, in some other places, MLAs and other people's representatives have volunteered to provide this facility. Respective divisions of KSRTC will also join hands for the implementation of this scheme.

Karnataka, once the facility becomes operational, will be the first state to start this service through its transport sector.

Bharat Petroleum will set up machines for providing clean drinking water at a cost of Rs 5.5 lac in each stations. KSRTC has 160 bus stands in taluk headquarters, revenue divisions and other towns. 15 bus stands, Dharmasthala, Subrahmanya, Kundapur, Pandavapura, Malavalli, Nagamangala, Srirangapatna, Melukote, K R Pet, Harapanahalli, Harihar, Honnali, Bhadravathi and Hiriyur stations will be providing this facility. These 15 units will be installed within a month, while other units will be provided by the end of March next year, said managing director of KSRTC, S R Umashankar.

It is gathered that Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation also plans to undertake this initiative in important bus stands with grants from local people's representatives.

The scheme proposes to serve people living in rural areas around the bus stands in addition to people using services of ordinary buses as clean water is provided free of cost in luxury buses by KSRTC. These units can dispense 24,000 litres of water everyday and anyone including passengers can access this service, a KSRTC official stated.

A fine idea to have healthy and clean water.Isuppose it is in a plastic bottle.when then again plastic kachra thrown either around or in waste bin.I suggest please charge a 25paisa as fund.so that people will bring back and not thrown on roads. But who is ready to sell must also take back these bottles and recycle it.Otherwise no selling.World is full of plastic.or water is sold in glas bottles? Our oceans are too with plastic and fishe swallow it and die out of hunger ,while it is not food.dont digest.we heard several cases of this plastic.so start now on.

It is a good move from KSRTC to provide clean water to the travellers by vending machine at a reasonable rate. However, it is much advisable if they provide clean toilets as well. While we have to take KSRTC night bus from Mangalore to Bangalore, the drivers stop the bus on the way for refreshments and for toilet purposes. As they were charging Rs. 5/- for using toilets in these places, the men in the bus often don't pay and instead they will attend natures call in the open area in dark so the place is badly stinking. On the other side some male attendants sit on table just outside the entrance of ladies toilets for collecting money. They look so scary in the night and they often harass ladies and children for not giving them money or proper change. Sometimes it is difficult in the night to take the cash while in a hurry to go to toilet. So I request the concerned authorities to look into the matter and kindly provide clean toilets to the night passengers on this route.
