Bengaluru, Oct 13: A police constable who was trying to smuggle two cellphones for being delivered to a suspected operative of Lashkar-E-Taiba organization was caught red-handed by the security personnel of the central prison here. The cellphones were meant to be given to a member of the dreaded organization named above, and the incident has proved that illegal activities have not yet completely stopped in the central prison here.
The arrested accused happens to be Dinesh, constable of city armed reserve force. Parappana Agrahara station police have registered a case against him under section 424 of Indian Penal Code and section 42 of the Prisons Act. Investigation is continuing.
T Nasir, suspected member of the said terrorist organization, who happens to be an accused in the 2008 serial bomb blasts case in the city, has been lodged in this prison. Hearing in the case is in progress in a court, and a warrant relating to the case was to be delivered to Nasir on Thursday. Dinesh came near the prison for serving warrant to Nasir but was caught by alert security staff.
The warrant cover Dinesh had brought contained two Samsung J2 smart phones. He told the security staff that he had come to serve summons to Nasir. The staff grew suspicious by the nervousness displayed by Dinesh. They then checked the warrant cover and found two phones concealed in there. The chief jail superintendent was told about the incident. The constable was taken into custody and two cellphones were seized. The arrested man was handed over to Parappana Agrahara police station staff.
Dinesh reportedly told the prison authorities and investigating officials that he was told to hand over the mobile phones to Nasir by someone, and Rs 5,000 was offered to him as reward for this work. He says he does not know the persons who entrusted him this task. A police officer said that the cellphones did not have SIM cards inside them.
It has been decided to also question the jail staff who were to collect the warrants from Dinesh and deliver it to Nasir, and also Nasir, in an effort to get to the root of the conspiracy. The staff are confident that questioning of Nasir can spill the beans about the entire turn of events relating to this episode.
