Bengaluru: No death penalty for Cyanide Mohan - High court sentences him to life imprisonment

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Oct 12: The Karnataka high court on Thursday October 12 sentenced serial killer Cyanide Mohan to life imprisonment until death without remission, thus rejecting the death sentence pronounced earlier by a trial court.

Based on the evidence provided by the prosecution and considering the the gravity of his offences, the division bench consisting of Justice Ravi Malimath and Justice John Michael Cunha pronounced the judgement.

"Cyanide Mohan Kumar is dangerous to the society, especially to women. Hence he should be confined in jail till the end of his life, without showing any mercy for any reason whatsoever," the court said.

Cyanide Mohan is charged with luring and murdering 20 women. In 2013, he was convicted of murdering three of his victims - Anita Barimar at KSRTC bus stand on June 18, 2009, Leela Vamadapadavu on September 10, 2005 at Mysuru bus stand, and Sunanda, on February 11, 2008. Recently, he was given life imprisonment in yet another similar case.

Mohan had appealed against the death penalty in the high court, arguing that there was not enough proof to hold him guilty. "Police personnel had registered first information reports against me merely on the basis of records of telephonic calls. There are no eyewitnesses. After arresting me, the police got certain statements executed by me under duress," he had claimed. All along his trial, Mohan refused to hire counsel and argued his own case.

These are the reason there are more criminals everywhere in India, our judiciary/system only feeding criminals but not punishing. we need a strong law to control crimes like gulf countries. Feeling sorry for those girls killed brutally by him and never get justice.

    How ironic and baffling!!
Few weeks back when the Emir of Kuwait pardoned the death sentence of Indians languishing in Kuwaiti prison, everyone praised the move in unison. However, when an Indian high court pardons the life of a convict in India, most seem to be appalled. WHY? Is the life of an Indian worth more in foreign prison than in an Indian prison?
Also note that the high court has not released Mohan from prison. He will spend the rest of his entire natural life in prison. What more do you guys want? Why is there so much of thirst for his blood? What objective of justice would be served by executing him that cannot be achieved by keeping him behind bars for the rest of his life?
And if the convicts of Bilkins Bano case could be spared death by the Bombay high court, how is Mohan more deserving of death?

Did the high court consider the views of the families of the twenty victims before pronouncing the sentence of life imprisonment? The High courts decision is an insult to the families of the victims.

Though he has murdered nearly 20 women 4 cases settled and judgement given. In previous similar cases he has been awarded death penalty. It is enough. By the time judgement of remaining cases comes he will be still in jail.

Why death? Allow him to roam free, let him continue his profession ( rape & murders) so that Police, Lawyers, Courts , Judges, Media, Govt. (Stamp Papers, Affidavits ) etc.. etc... get good business from the victims family.
End of the day Families lost their dear ones & money, but for other agencies it's business.

Imprisonment for life without parole is more harsher punishment than death penalty.
If they hang him, it will be over in a minute, but now he will have to live behind bars, eventually pain of death will not spare him anyway. Cost of maintenance is no big issue for a such a big country like ours.
He should be kept in solitary confinement till death, there he will die daily.

Some truths have lies in them...
Some judgments have mercy in them...
It is hard to understand what is right and what is wrong now a days...
However he will spend his time inside forever...
    RIP to the departed souls...
It is a tragedy that you all can not talk truth in our courts...
