Mangaluru, Oct 9: A man was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident at Bondel here late night on Monday October 9.

The accident occured in front of Bondel church when an unidentified vehicle rammed into the man's scooter and sped away.

The identity of the scooter rider is not yet known.

He was riding from Padavinangady, and the vehicle that hit him was also plying in the same direction.

As soon as the accident occured, locals rushed to the spot and took the injured man to hospital. He is said to have suffered head injuries.

His scooter was badly damaged in the accident.

    Yet another tragic victim of reckless driving and Police/MCC apathy. The strait stretches of Airport road, specially between Maryhill and Kavoor are tempting invitation for motorist, specially for taxis from Kerala, to over-speed and cause death and injuries to pedestrians and two-wheeler riders. The stretch has two schools with over 3000 students – from KG to PUC. Then, the church attracts hundreds of devotees, including senior citizens. I had visited the Traffic Police at Mangalore East station to make an oral and written representation. I was assured that action had been planned between the police and MCC. That was about two years ago after which a Gulf-returned man on a morning walk was knocked down dead off Bondel Junction by an airport-bound vehicle.

    I will once again spell out points for action.
    1 There should be traffic booth around which traffic from and to Pachanady Road, including heavy garbage vans, can negotiate without head-on confrontation at the tri-junction.
    2 Have speed-breakers after this round-about so that north-bound traffic slows down before Daijiworld building and another such speed -breaker before the Church gate for south-bound traffic. Similar speed-breakers should be provided in front of the dwara of MGC school complexwhere 1400 students cross the road.

    The excuse that speed-breakers cannot be provided because it is VIP road is slavish and pathetic. Is it more important to speed up VIPs at the cost of lives of local common people? I think that there is no choice and the safety of people comes first before over-speeding of any VIP’s vehicles. Will Traffic Police and MCC act before more people are killed and maimed?

    The junction near St Lawrence church, Bondal is dangerous moreover, the U turn created one more feather to the existing danger. Number of accidents occurred in the junction. Vehicle entering to the main road from service road in-direction towards Kavoor/Airport always pose danger not only them self but also to the speeding vehicle towards Kavoor/Airport because of the bus stop which is obstruction to see the speeding vehicle on main road. Service road vehicle has to enter 25% of the main road to have clearance of the road before negotiating entry. Concern people shall evaluate the issue seriously, either by providing speed breaker or relocating the bus stop.
