Karkala, Sep 19: Four new check posts have been installed in Hebri Someshwara, Mala Kadari, Sanoor Murathangadi and Hosmaru Nooralbettu to check illegal mining. They will start functioning soon.

Hebri Someshwara, Mala Kadari, Sanoor Murathangadi check posts are on national highways while Hosmaru Nooralbettu check post is on the state highway.

Rampant illegal sand mining is in progress on either sides of Seetha River, Shambhavi and Suvarna lake. There are allegations that illegal sand gets transported to other districts and states from here. Established interests are active in the network.

Ordinary people are unable to get sand for their needs and put to hardship. The coast is facing a situation where they have to pay exorbitant rates for sand.

The quantity of illegal sand mining is more than the legal mining in the taluk limits. Besides, there is rampant business of mixing residue from black stone mining with sand. Such sand is being used mostly for government's construction works. The departments have ignored such practices making them widespread. Therefore it is not possible to maintain quality in construction.
