Mangaluru: Changed Dasara holidays in district likely - Ramanath Rai

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 19: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, B Ramanath Rai, said that he has requested the chief minister (CM) to grant Dasara holidays to students in Dakshina Kannada district on the days similar to the ones given in Mysuru. He said that the CM has expressed his willingness to positively consider this request.

Speaking to media persons here on Monday September 18, Rai said that he had met the CM on September 13 at Bengaluru and informed him about Dasara holiday in Dakshina Kannada having been given from October 11 to 25 whereas holidays in Mysuru for Dasara are from September 21 to October 5. He said he sought this modification to enable students to take part in Dasara celebrations and Navaratri Utsav in the city. "The chief minister asked the chief secretary to consider the request," he stated, adding that he had already discussed the matter with the concerned minister and officials, and expected an official announcement about changed dates by September 20.

Rai also explained that he has deputed his special officer to Bengaluru on September 18 in an effort to take up the issue with the concerned and to get the concerned to take immediate action. "A letter has also been sent from the office of the deputy commissioner, and the office of the deputy director of public instruction has got information about it. As the CM has been convinced about the need to change dates of holidays, we expect announcement about changed holidays soon," he claimed.

The minister was informed that the children and their parents are finding it hard to celebrate Dasara as the festival has approached this year a few weeks ahead. He was told that as examinations are conducted during Dasara period, the parents face further problems.

Many parents including me have planned to holiday already. We have booked our train, plane, hotel tickets etc. Now this is all waste. I hope our children will not cry. Useless decisions taken at last moment does more harm than good.'

Dassara is not just a state festival, it is a festival of all Hindus as well as those of other faiths. There should be uniformity in holiday celebrations not just in schools but in the whole communities, just like the feasts celebrated by Muslims and Christians - they don't have different dates for Xmas and New Year or Easter depending on a state, or for that matter Ramadan. Dates are universally set; so also dussera and deepavali.
It is too late to rearrange the dates for this year; it should be seriously considered by each state, whether Karnataka, Bengal or Maharashtra, and some uniformity should prevail.

All these years people celebrated dasara becos govt. holidays are given on said days. Why to change the academic calender in the middle of the year. It should have been planned in the beginning of the year atleast.

Very strange! Oct. 11 to 25 in Mangalore and Sept. 21 to Oct. 05 in Mysore. Two different periods of holidays for the same state festival in the same state. This big gap seems to be larger than the distance between DK and Mysore. It shows how careless and irresponsible is the Education Dept.

It will be very difficult for schools and parents who have already scheduled their holidays now at the last moment, specially the outstation stations and those who go to gulf countries on vacation etc. Why can't Government keep all these things in mind while announcing school holidays? Didn't government/education department know that Dasara comes early this time? For people who are supporting minister Rai's proposal - you all are local people - change of holidays will not affect you. But what about outstation students? We have already booked our tickets and now if schools change their holidays, will we get tickets to go to other states/abroad??? A someone already mentioned, some schools are having exams these days. Let us be practical and don't change at the last minute and cause inconvenience to others.

Good News. We have so many discrepancies in declaration of holidays . In DK and Udupi Sri Krishna Janmashtami was celebrated on 12 September but the government holiday was on 14th August. . Since our festivals depending on the movement of planet we should fix the date on observation before one week. The same problem faced by Muslims during their festivals. In consideration of the above problems government should fix some number of days for some festivals and the district administration concerned should declare the holidays.

This goes to prove that education department folks do not take their brains to work. Looks like a copy paste of job from last year's holiday calendar. At least the minister woke up to realize that Navaratri is celebrated not just in Mysore.

Why so much of negative comments for a good Job from the District In charge Minister. where do u see divide in community here. Navrathri being the sate festival deserves to get holidays. Whats wrong in asking for Holidays to celebrate the majority community festival when it is celebrated with such grand in Mangalore. our children's deserve to enjoy this festive season . People from DK are intelligent enough to understand this.

Nothing wrong in having uniform holidays across the state for Dussera which is a state festival. In Kerala you don't have different dates for the Onam festival. However, I don't understand why the minister has woken up at the last moment. Why was this not done before the academic year began? This last moment change if implemented would only cause difficulties to students and the school authorities. They can if they want bring about changes from next year onwards.

It is better to implement from next year on wards. Most of the parents might have planed their Dasara holidays and it is difficult to change their schedule at last moment.
