Fallen trees, muddy streets: Rain leaves Bengaluru in a big mess

Bengaluru, Sep 10 (DHNS): The city on Saturday woke up to uprooted trees, broken electricity poles and water-logged roads.

A heavy downpour late on Friday night wreaked havoc, flooding homes and bringing down fully-grown trees in many neighbourhoods.

South Bengaluru was badly affected. Citizens gingerly tiptoed around the mess, wary of snapped power lines. In some places, sewage water entered homes.

As DH had reported on Saturday, three people died near Minerva Circle. A young mechanic was washed away in a drain near Seshadripuram.

Sampangiramnagar received 79.5 mm of rainfall, followed by Kanmanahalli (70 mm) and Kushalnagara (66.5 mm).

Frequently flooded areas such as Koramangala and HSR Layout received just 32.5 mm and 22.5 mm respectively, and yet were flooded for want of proper stormwater drains.

Basavanagudi, Avalahalli, Dodda Bommasandra and KR Puram too received heavy rainfall.

Teams at work

BBMP had set up 21 teams to remove road blocks caused by tree falls. They had managed to remove most, but in some places work remained in progress.

BBMP and BWSSB staff were busy clearing blocks in several places, while citizens carried out the work elsewhere.

People in flooded areas had a sleepless night as water gushed into their homes. Many vehicles were damaged by falling trees and electric poles.

The misery worsened with prolonged power cuts. In Shankarpuram, power was restored only after 2 pm on Saturday.

Building collapse

In Bharathinagar, a building partially collapsed, forcing residents to move out. An electricity pole crashed just off Kanakapura Road in Jayanagar.

The rain and storm uprooted trees in Seshadripuram and Malleswaram. Widespread damage was reported from Thanisandra, Hegde Nagar, and Fathima layout.

Alert for today, tomorrow

According to the India Meteorological Department and Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), very heavy rain is expected on Sunday and Monday in Bengaluru.

It was a terrible time for Bengalurians going through fallen trees, muddy streets, floods all over and above all several cars damaged with uprooted old trees on top of the cars. It is nature's fury which we have to face sometimes for good or for bad. Now we are waiting for the deadliest hurricane Irma which is passing through Miami, Key West and moving to other parts of Florida. God help all of them.

This is the effect of destruction thousands of acres of Western Ghat forest land for the Yettinahole Project. The environmentalists had fore warned the destruction. Bangalore never had rains like this before. What is suppose to rain in the western Ghats area, now it is causing destruction in and around Bangalore area. It had rained heavily causing total blockage about 3 weeks ago in Bangalore. Now there is no rainfall in Coastal Districts which is used to rain heavily during this time of the year. This is the effect of human being playing with Mother Nature and the Nature balancing itself. The worst thing will come in the future in and around Bangalore with more disaster, in the Ghats area and less rainfall in the coastal region. The earlier it is realized better it will be for the mankind. Jai Hind.
