Mangaluru, Sep 8: The working journalist union and Karnataka journalists' association submitted a memorandum to assistant deputy commissioner and IGP Hemanth Nimbalkar after Bantwal police arrested a reporter of a web portal and newspaper on September 7 for his report on the disrespect shown to Quran during the police search at Khalandar's residence.
On September 2, during the search at Khalandar's residence, accused in Sharat murder case, it was claimed that police allegedly showed ‘disrespect’ to Quran and ‘tore’ Madrasa books while conducting the search. This news was carried by a web portal alleging that police had disrespected Quran.
Later SP Sudheer Kumar Reddy denied the allegations and clarified that the police personnel in the search team did not touch any religious books. He also said that the police have video recording as proof. The video was also released to mediapersons and it was found that the SP was right.
The police arrested the journalist under section 153 (A) and 505 (2) of the Indian Penal code. He was produced before the court on Friday evening.
As IGP was not present during the meet, he assured to meet journalist union on September 14 and to look into the matter.
Jaganath Shetty Bala, Sudesh Jain, Srinivas Nayak and Tharnath Kapikaad from district working journalists' association and others were present.
