Udupi, Sep 4: Catholic Education Society, diocese of Udupi, on Saturday, September 2, celebrated Teachers’ Day at St Mary’s English Medium School, Kannarpady here.

District-in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj addressing the gathering said, "Teachers’ Day here is always very special as teachers themselves showcase their talents. There is a teacher behind every successful person. I am very fortunate to have had a great teacher in Cony in class four; he taught us manners."

"A survey report indicates all 58 panchayats of Udupi district as developed. Human Development Index also points out that Udupi district, when compared to national average, has the least child mortality rate. Once again Udupi has secured the first place in SSLC and PUC exams in the state.  Catholic Education Society has played a commendable role in the education sector.

" A teacher must commit towards making children successful beings. Teachers do not retire even after their retirement. The respect for them remains throughout," he said.

Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo presided over the programme. In his address, he said, "There is a famous quote in the Bible about respecting parents and gurus. Teachers are responsible for building the future. Teaching is not just a profession; it is a calling. Teachers are like potters. Students get shaped based how the teacher shapes them. It is all in the hands of the teachers. A students’ future is unpredictable, but when they get to a good position, teachers can proudly say 'that is my student'.

"Heart, mind, soul and body are all key to learning. The current education system promotes cognitive development. But physical, spiritual and mental are also essential in the integrated development of a good human being," he said.

DDPI Vijayalakshmi speaking on the occasion said, "Times have changed. Teaching profession is not as easy now. Teachers have a lot of pressure from parents, education board, management for the best result. There is a common saying about students needing punishment along with results. For success, one must not have hesitations, fear or inferiority complex. Teachers should build confidence among students. A model teacher should keep students updated on general knowledge. There is a lack of infrastructure in government schools, but they get good results as compared to other schools."

Fr Lawrence C D'Souza, secretary of Catholic Education Society Udupi was present.

The programme began with an invocation by teachers of Milagres English Medium School, Kannarpady, followed by a welcome dance by teachers of St Mary’s English Medium School.

Retired teaching and non-teaching staff were felicitated on occasion for their dedicated work. Top scorers among students were also recognised and honored by chief guests.

Teachers performed a cultural programme as part of the day's celebrations.

Valerian Mendonca welcomed the gathering.
