Udupi, Aug 11: Karnataka minister of fisheries, youth empowerment and sports directed concerned officials to dispose off applications received from the transgender community for facilities meant for them.
He was speaking after presiding over a review meeting of rehabilitation and development for transgenders held at the office of deputy commissioner on Thursday, August 10.
The state government has brought about several projects for transgenders and responded to their grievances. Those are meant to prevent feelings of solitude, strengthen their confidence and mental stability in them. Officials should work toward it.
The benefits of friendship, self-employment and shelter are made available for a few of them. Those should reach all the beneficiaries, said Sanjiva Vandse.
The minister asked all tahsildars to allot sites to them on priority basis. He asked the district treasury project director Arun Prabha to consider physically challenged and transgenders for self-employment in identified vendor zones. He asked deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis to provide opportunities to transgenders while providing jobs on contract basis in various government departments.
The concerned officials should transfer some of the beneficiaries of self-employment among transgenders waiting for the facilities to other districts as the scope is limited in Udupi district. Officials should conduct a survey of transgenders in the district and identify a place in Udupi district hospital premises to open an office in this connection.
The department of women and child welfare and department of health should hold a workshop to inform transgenders about the benefits extended by the union and state government to them, he said.
Zilla panchayat chief executive Shivananda Kapashi, Kundapur sub divisional officer Shilpa Nag, additional deputy commissioner Anuradha, officials of various departments and members of transgenders were present.
