Bagalkote, Jul 30: During a protest by Kuruba community demanding reservation, members ransacked the office of the deputy commissioner (DC) here on Saturday, July 30.
The protestors had also brought hundreds of sheep along with them for the protest.
The protesting Kuruba community members came in a procession from Kalidas ground in Navanagar and reached DC’s office. Then they barged into DC’s chambers and broke the windowpanes. Police had to resort to mild caning to disperse the mob.
The protesters were angry not to find DC P A Meghannavar when they wanted to present a memorandum to him. They had informed about their arrival in advance, it is gathered. .
Revanasiddeshwara Swamiji of Manasuru Math Dharwad climbed on to the DC’s table and addressed the gathering. The staff at the office and the police personnel on duty looked on helplessly during this time.
Additional police personnel were brought later and the protesters were sent out with the help of caning.
Meghannavar later said that he did not know about the protest plan. “I would have waited if I had known,” he said.
Former MP A H Vishwanath and actor Yogesh were also present during the incident.
Vishwanath later apologised to the DC for the ransacking of his office. He took the protesters to task over the incident.
