Beltangady, Apr 12 : The state High Court on Tuesday April 11, granted stay on the CBI’s further investigation into the sensational rape and murder case of Sowjanya.
Justice Anand Byrareddy granted the stay while hearing a petition filed by Dheeraj Jain, Uday Jain and Malik Jain. All these three persons are named as witnesses in the chargesheet filed by CBI relating to this case.
Sowjanya (17), a PUC student of SDM College in Ujire near here, was raped and killed on her way back home on October 9, 2012.
The CBI had filed a chargesheet naming Santosh Rao as the main suspect. Dheeraj Jain, Uday Jain and Malik Jain were named as eyewitnesses.
Sowjanya’s father’s submitted a plea for further investigation into the murder case even after the chargesheet was filed. Following this, the CBI court had ordered for further probe.
Recently, the three witnesses challenged the CBI court order contending that once charge sheet has been filed, further investigation cannot be conducted in the same case.
Justice Byrareddy, who heard the petition, granted stay on the CBI’s further investigation into the case.
