Bangalore, March 14, 2008: The stellar role played by ‘Master Blaster’ Sachin Tendulkar in the recently concluded CB Series helped him reach the top spot in World ODI Batting Rankings in the latest ‘Maruti Suzuki Cricket Ratings’ released by ESPN STAR Sports. Brett Lee’s consistent performance has helped him top the World ODI Bowling charts. Ponting’s recent poor string of runs has ensured that his ranking drops down to the 10th spot in the World Batting Rankings. He is the still the highest ranked Australian batsmen as none of the other Aussie batsmen could enter the Top ten. Australia (108 points) continues to be at the top of World ODI Team Rankings but the lead has been reduced to a slender 4 points. South Africa’s recent success against minnows Bangladesh has boosted their tally to 104 points.
Sachin leads the World ODI Batting Rankings with 198 points. Team mate & Indian Captain MS Dhoni is at the seventh spot with 180 pts. West Indian Shivnarine Chanderpaul (191pts) is placed second while Mohammad Yousuf (190 pts) from Pakistan rests at the third position. Brendon McCullum (188 pts) from New Zealand is at the fourth position while team mate Jamie How (177 pts) is placed at the eighth position. South African Herschelle Gibbs (186 pts), Graeme Smith (181 pts) and Abraham de Villiers (175 pts) are placed at the fifth, sixth and ninth positions respectively. Ricky Ponting (172 pts) at the 10th position completes the top 10 list for ODI batting rankings.
Unlike Australian batsmen, the bowlers from Down Under continue to rule the World ODI Bowling Rankings. Brett Lee is at the top of the bowling charts with 196 points. Team mates Nathan Bracken (181 pts) and Mitchell Johnson (179 pts) are placed at the fourth and the fifth positions respectively. Kyle Mills (190 pts) and team mate and captain Daniel Vettori (161 pts) are placed at the second and the eighth positions. Stuart Broad (186 pts) and James Anderson (158 pts) from England are at the third and the tenth positions respectively. Jerome Taylor (174 pts) from West Indies, Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga (166 pts) and Morne Morkel (160 pts) from South Africa are placed at the sixth, seventh and ninth positions respectively, completing the top 10 list for World ODI Bowling rankings.
Interestingly none of the Indian bowlers could enter the top ten list. Ishant Sharma (155 points) is the highest placed Indian bowler at the 11th spot in the World ODI Bowling Rankings while team mate Sreesanth (150 points) is at the 12th spot. RP Singh with 134 points is at the 18th spot. In the World ODI Batting Charts, Gautam Gambhir is placed at 12 spot with 167 points while team mate Yuvraj Singh is at the 17th position with 155 points.
In the World ODI Team Rankings, Australia (108 pts) is followed by South Africa (104 pts), India (99 pts), New Zealand (90 pts), Pakistan (79 pts), Sri Lanka (72 pts), England (70 pts), West Indies (38 pts), Zimbabwe (18 pts), and Bangladesh (8 pts).
Maruti Suzuki Ratings
The Maruti Suzuki Cricket Ratings, issued by ESPN STAR Sports, take into account all international cricket played over the past 6-9 months. The ratings are generated on One Day International (ODI) Batting, ODI Bowling, Test Match Batting, Test Bowling, ODI Teams and Test Teams
The ratings are arrived at broadly on 3 main algorithms used– for batting, bowling and team ratings. The individual algorithms vary for Tests and ODIs to incorporate the essential differences in each form of the game.
The Batting algorithm considers runs scored and different weightages (factors) like Home/Away, quality of opposition, importance of the particular match not out factor, match winning innings and strike rate are applied to get the final batting points on which players are ranked.
Similarly, the Bowling algorithm uses a bowler’s ‘raw’ performance, strike rate/economy and Quality of batsman dismissed to arrive at Bowling Points on which all bowlers are ranked.
The Team Ratings algorithm considers a team’s performance in the relevant time-period and their win-loss ratio is factored to arrive at Team Points on which the teams are ranked. The key factors here are home/away, quality of opposition, and the importance of particular games.
