Dubai, Feb 26: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has said it will confiscate the identity cards of any taxi drivers who refuse to take passengers following a series of complaints. Drivers will also be forced to undergo training and could even face fines if they are found to be flouting the rules.
“Drivers will have to sit for ten days of training for refusing to take passengers. They will not be allowed to work any shifts during this time,” an official said. In recent months the RTA has received a barrage of complaints from the public saying drivers have been refusing to pick them up in crowded areas such as Bur Dubai, Deira and Sharjah.
“They come up with excuses for refusing the passenger. Sometimes they say that the taxi is already booked by another customer or that they received an SMS from another passenger. They are not even afraid about filing a complaint with the RTA,” said Uday Mahurkar from Al Qusais. People can file a complaint by calling toll free on 800 9090.
