Congress launches nationwide campaign to defend National Herald, counters BJP’s ‘Web of lies’

New Delhi, Apr 21: In a show of strength and unity, the Congress has launched a nationwide campaign from April 21 to 24, aiming to counter what it calls the BJP’s ‘web of lies’ and ‘anti-national attempts’ to dismantle The National Herald — a publication that holds deep roots in India’s freedom movement.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said that 57 senior leaders of the party will hold simultaneous press conferences in 57 cities across the country to “expose the BJP’s lies” and connect with the people on the issue of press freedom and institutional integrity.

Describing the initiative as a ‘battle for India’s soul,’ Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh accused the BJP of trying to suppress independent voices and rewrite history. “This is part of a disturbing trend to erase historical institutions that symbolize India’s democratic journey and the sacrifices of freedom fighters,” he stated.

The campaign will span from Kashmir to Thiruvananthapuram and from Varanasi to Vijayawada, underscoring the party’s commitment to taking its message across the country. Senior Congress leaders, former Union ministers, and MPs chosen for their regional influence and national standing will lead the press briefings.

Party leaders allege that the BJP’s attack on The National Herald is not merely a political vendetta but an ideological move aimed at dismantling institutions that played pivotal roles during the freedom struggle. “This is a larger plan to weaken the legacy of independent India,” they said.

Through this campaign, Congress aims to galvanise public opinion not just around current concerns but also the preservation of historical legacies. The party vowed to continue resisting what it called “the misuse of central agencies” and “assaults on press freedom,” with truth, constitutional values, and public support as its pillars.
