New railway station at Jokatte, close to Mangaluru airport, ready to function

Mangaluru, Feb 19: The new railway station at Jokatte under Palakkad division of Southern Railways which was under construction since 2014 has finally been completed. The new railway station is close to Mangalore International Airport and is likely to come as a blessing for air passengers too.

Constructed under an estimated budget of Rs 50 crore, the station is yet to recieve green signal to start functioning.

The project was first initiated in the year 2012 to help commuters reach airport with ease and also reduce congestion at Mangaluru Junction Railway station. The UPA government during the tenure of railway minister K H Muniyappa had instructed officials to prepare a detailed report for the railway station at Jokatte. The construction went in full swing from the year 2014.

The brand new railway station is just 4 km away from the airport making Mangaluru the first city in the state to have a railway station close to an airport. Jokatte railway station is the 95th railway station in Palakkad division of Southern Railway. Once this railway station becomes functional, people can have easy access to Mangalore International Airport.

The new railway station will house two platforms and a subway connecting the platforms with the station building. Modern electronic interlocking is provided for the signal system at the station. The station building has a waiting hall and a booking office.

The mandatory permission for signal from Thokur station of Konkan Railway is not required now for dispatching goods trains from Mangaluru Junction to Panambur. This will also enhance effective goods handling at Panambur.

New track

The track doubling work of 5.9 km between Jokatte and Panambur stations along with tunnel work at Kulashekar has now been completed. Earlier, the single track facility from Mangaluru Junction railway station to Panambur was leading to interruptions in railway crossing and delay for passengers. A new road is under construction which will facilitate commuters from Maravoor and KBS Jokatte to access the new railway station.

New Pejawar Railway Station?

There is a request from locals residing in and around Jokatte that the new railway station should be named as Pejawar Railway station. Pejawar Math is located just a few kilometres away from the new station. It is said that an appeal has been already made to railway minister Suresh Prabhu and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel on the same.

Speaking to daijiworld, PRO of Southern Railway Palakkad division Gopinathan said, "The new railway station at Jokkatte with double track is awaiting green signal from the Southern Railways committee. Southern Railway has created a valuable asset by commissioning Jokatte railway station. At present, the station is functional for operational purposes and the station will be opened for passengers soon. Jokatte station will help to ease the movement of trains between Thokur and Panambur stations. Besides improving the operational flexibility, double track between Jokatte and Panambur and the station building at Jokatte would contribute towards better safety as well."

What is the frequency of trains passing through this station. Planes at Mangalore airport land throughout the day, and I believe there is only one local train ( mangalore- madgaon).
Is it really going to benefit passengers? Plane lands in early morning, and train passes this station in the evening, means a passenger reaches from Dubai in 2.5 hours and to reach his home from Mangalore Airport he need 12 hours as he need to wait for the train whole day.

Auto drivers and taxi drivers will make fast cash and take the passengers for a good drive/ride. There should be pre paid counters outside the station. We do not have a pre paid counter at Mangalore Junction station too. The passengers alighting at Mangalore Junction are cheated royally by the auto drivers. Authorities should look into it.

Its good news for many travelers. However looking at the station building and shelter doesn't look like 50 crore worth. Possibly spent very very less and the bill must be very big.

This is good news for Air Passengers at Mangalore and was long long overdue.

The developments in the Railways in and around the Harbour City of Mangalore are all happening too slowly due to the control from Palghat.

It's high time that Mangalore became a independent Division the Railways . The Stranglehold of Palghat on MAQ is obvious as despite having more half a dozen Kannadigas as Railway Ministers at the Centre , Mangalore Junction and the Stations around it are dependent on Palghat for every nut, screw & bolt. The Major factories like MRPL, MCF and others have to rune after Palghat Division for release of Rail Wagons for Transport of their material.

How long this slavery will continue is questionable and as our politicians are busy with other activities . Not enough public support is also perhaps another factor ?

Jokatte Station can greatly benefit air passengers traveling to and from distant places like Kundapur and Puttur, provided there are regular train services connecting these towns. Further it will also benefit train passengers arriving from Mumbai and Bangalore.

Dont see this Railway station being great help to airport passengers. Firstly there is no frequent trains. Secondly its still 4km away, not 1 or 2. So you still need other means for transport from train station to airport

I have experienced this multiple times at different airports including Mangalore Airport that we get inferior quality taxi even though we pay at the airport counter paying good amount of money. In recent years I have started flying from Bangalore airport by using KSRTC volvo buses which go all the way to the airport even though I have to change bus at Majestic. I know that it takes some more hours to fly from Bangalore, but it is worth the trouble rather than using old taxis in and out of Mangalore Airport. Apart from that since it takes around 24 hours to reach here by flight it doesn't matter to spend few hours by bus. Also once I have traveled by Rajdhani Express from Kozhikode to Udupi after flying from the Middle-East and it was a good & different kind of experience.

The authorities like KSRTC, should start services to Mangalore Airport, irrespective of Taxi Mafia working at the Airport premises or not. Airport should be made user friendly to all modes of transport and not limited to taxi or Auto. We should build monorail, bus connectivity to the airport. Why KSRTC still not starting bus services throughout the day from the city to the Airport?

This railway station need to be named as Mangalore International Airport railway station and to make sure that there is shuttle service between here and the airport. Air passenger should be given the priority to chooses whichever transport they choose and not someone else. This way there will be more people choosing to fly from this airport and more flights to more destinations in future. People avoid flying from this airport for various reasons such as table top runway, lack of multiple modes of transport. Most people like to fly from Bangalore airport as it has more flights, good multiple modes of transport, even though it is around 400 kms from Mangalore.

Jokatte was a popular name that was floating in my mind for the past nearly 65 years, and this was the pplace that I was longing to visit by a small boat from Kuloor one of thee days when I visit Mangalore next. Jokatte was a little mini small craft harbor during my middle school days when I travelled by a small little country boat from Kuloor to Pezaar via Jokatte. The roads were so barrow and rugged that only bullock carts could travel in those days from Jokatte to Qaitha Khumair in Pezaar. There were few small little wooden bridges on the narrow roads, but the journey was scenic with a glimpse of the virgin outlook of a typic small village.

As much as I am anxious to make a train journey from Mangalore to Panamboor via Jokatte and Pejawar, I am still anxious to make the boat journey from Kuloor to Jokatte with the help of a small country boat and then walk towards Qaitha Khumeir where lies the gigantic refinery of ONGC that was formerly owned by the Birlas.

History of the past has its own beauty and glory to recollect. The old history is still a gold history because it brings back all the glorious and precious memories of the humble past. When myself and my dear partner visit Mangalore next, a visit to Jokatte by boat as well as train will be a "must" on the Agenda. Dear Jokatte, here we come with our cameras, our note pads and our group of enthusiasts who will join in our pilgrimage that we were longing to accomplish for a long time.

    @ Mr. Maxim Rasquinha,
Localities like Qaitha Khumeir and Mood Padav have virtually vanished from the scene. After the diversion of Surathkal – Bajpe Road one cannot easily make out where was Qaitha Khumeir. Today’s generation doesn’t even know about that name. Yet Bus No. 45F still displays Qaitha Khumeir on its signboard even after changing its destination. To me the to and fro running of this bus brings back those golden memories. The only old structures that stand today are the Pezar Church, the two church schools and the Pejavar Temple. Not forgetting those golden memories one also needs to appreciate the development taken place in recent years.

Great news, provided this station and Bajpe Airport is connected with broad roads, several trains with stops at this station. It may take ages until this station is commuter friendly! There is no bus station at Bajpe Airport and what are we talking about mass transport connectivity at the Airport! It is an open secret about Taxi Mafia!!
There should be few KSRTC bus arriving and leaving from Airport at peak airport timings towards Mangalore and Mulki / Udupi. It will fetch sufficient passengers if reliable service is provided, even if bus charges double the fare...still it is many times cheaper than Taxi or connectivity to nearest Bajpe city bus stop! Even if there is regular bus from Kavoor to to Bajpe Aiport 10 time a day...lot useful not only to passengers...also to several hundred airport staff and contract worker employees!
