Mangaluru, Apr 2: Raising funds for police welfare by selling police flags is not a justified practice. Instead, a portion of fines collected for traffic violations should be allocated for this purpose, suggested retired CCB PSI Harish Padavinangady.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the Karnataka State Police Flag and Welfare Day celebrations held at the D A R parade ground in Mangaluru on Wednesday. The event was jointly organized by Mangaluru city police, district police, and the 7th battalion of KSRP, Mangaluru.

Harish Padavinangady emphasized the need to provide annual group insurance for retired police personnel, ensuring their families also benefit. He also called for free annual health check-ups for retired officers and the availability of quality hospital facilities for them under health schemes.
Call to allow retired police personnel to wear uniform on national days
He urged the government to permit retired police personnel who wish to participate in national celebrations in uniform, similar to retired military personnel.
Highlighting the importance of fitness, he advised retirees to engage in at least 30 to 40 minutes of daily exercise to maintain good health. He noted that many suffer from health issues due to a lack of exercise despite their interest in wearing good clothes and enjoying various foods.
DCP (law and order) Siddharth Goyal presided over the event. He stated that police officers work for the safety and peace of society and that 50% of the funds raised through police flag sales are allocated for the welfare of retired personnel at the central level, while the remaining 50% is directed to the respective unit's retired personnel welfare. He added that society respects police officers when they serve with honesty.
During the event, officers and personnel who retired in the 2024-25 period were felicitated. DCP (traffic and crime) Ravishankar, probationary SP Manisha, additional SP Rajendra D S, and KSRP 7th battalion commandant S Sathyanarayana were present.
