Kasargod, Sep 4: In an accident which occurred at Periyaram near Kannur on national highway 66 on Saturday September 3 morning, a man was killed while two others were admitted into hospital with serious injuries.
The deceased has been identified as Nagaraj (40) from Balkur near Kundapur, who was driving the ill-fated truck. Lorry cleaner, Ratnakar Suvarna (37) of Udupi and medical student, Joseph Kurien (27), who was driving the car, suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized.
The lorry with a load of fish meant to be taken to Kannur from Udupi district and a car driven by a medical student of Periyaram Medical College, were involved with the accident. In the accident, the lorry driver got tossed out of the truck. When he fell, the truck which fell by its side, landed on him, crushing him to death. Locals put in lot of efforts in bringing him out from under the truck and rush him to hospital but he could not be saved.
The truck, which went out of the control of the driver, hit a tree and electric pole before falling by its side with a thud. The car plunged into the gorge by the roadside. Both the tree and electric pole were snapped in the accident, but as power supply got severed instantly, major catastrophe was averted.
Traffic on the highway was adversely affected for sometime on account of this accident.
