Lionel Messi retires from international football

Jun 27 (AFP): Lionel Messi sensationally announced his retirement from international football here on Sunday after Argentina crashed to an upset defeat against Chile in the final of the Copa America.

"For me the national team is over. I've done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion," the 29-year-old Barcelona superstar told reporters after his fourth defeat in a major final with Argentina.

Argentina lost the Copa America final 4-2 via penalties for the second consecutive year.

Chile upset favourites Argentina with a penalty shootout victory in the Copa America final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday to retain their title in the world's oldest continental football competition.

Chile earned themselves bragging rights as South America's dominant team as they beat heavyweights Argentina 4-2 on penalties for a second straight year.

Messi missed from the spot in the shootout, cutting a dejected figure after the result was sealed and Argentina's trophy drought had been extended to 23 years.

"We are an historic group and we proved that today," Chilean striker Eduardo Vargas told TV cameras after the game.

The two sides were deadlocked 0-0 after 90 minutes and also after another half an hour of extra time in a match where both teams were reduced to 10 men in the first half.

Chilean substitute Francisco Silva placed his penalty low and to the right of Sergio Romero to score the decider after Messi and Lucas Biglia missed for Argentina and Arturo Vidal missed for Chile.

The win was the second Copa America in a row for Chile, who won their first Copa title at home last year in exactly the same fashion, beating Argentina on penalties after the teams had drawn 0-0 after extra time.

The excitement of the penalty finish barely made up for a disappointing game in which both teams failed to provide many memorable moments for the announced sellout 82,000 crowd in New Jersey.

The bulk of first half action involved referee Heber Lopes in an overly physical encounter.

The Brazilian sent off Marcelo Diaz on 27 minutes for a second crude challenge on Messi, and then he levelled the sides 15 minutes later when he showed Marcos Rojo a straight red for a harsh tackle on Vidal.

Three others were booked, including Messi for diving inside the box, in a first half that had as many cards as shots on goal.

The second half provided more of the same and although Chile, who have never beaten Argentina in open play in 26 previous Copa America encounters, at least managed to call Romero into action, neither side created any clear cut chances.

The 30 minutes of extra time was more of the same, although Vargas came close for Chile and substitute Sergio Aguero had a nice header tipped over by Claudio Bravo.

The Centenary Copa America was played in the United States for the first time this year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the inaugural Copa America in 1916.

The tournament was expanded to 16 teams, 10 from South America and six from the CONCACAF region of North and central America and the Caribbean.

Messi individually is a fantastic player to watch. But problem in Argentina is they are too much dependent on him due to which opposite team block him most of the time and hence Messi finds it difficult move the ball. Normally when there are multiple star players in a team then the opposite team cant block a single player because the other star players will get chance to score. Argentina team doesn't have another player to score when Messi is not able to score.

    Zeitgeist,

Messi is a Coward...He couldn't win he wants to quit !! Is this the greatest player you're talking about?? He's more concerned on individual accolades than try to win for his country...
Germany lost many Semifinals and finals tournaments...But they never quit !!

Worlds Best Footballer they said! Its just that he plays for the worlds best team #Barca (No team has midfield like Xavi and Iniesta).

I think people forgot Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Zidane, Maldini, Gerad Muller, Pele, Maradona.

Messi is a Great Player but not the best of all.

Some of our Indian cricket players and Indian politicians they are same, they both have one thing in common don't want to leave on their own even though they don't perform. Messi took a bold step by retiring for not winning championship cup for his country although he had more chance ahead he is just 29.

If he had chosen to play for Spain, he would have been undisputed greatest player to ever play the game. He chose to play for Argentina and won nothing.

'' Argentinian players are one of the best. Alone they can do anything with a ball, but when you put eleven Argentinians togather in a team they dont play that well.''

    - Alfredo Di Stefano.

it was 0-0 after the end of the game.if i am not wrong during penalties it is one messi versus opposite team.there was no involvement of other Argentina players.still what happened to this so called hero.fit only to play in private tournaments where huge money is involved.i want to correct your statement.if messi was not included in Argentina team then they would have won more tournaments.better for Argentina that he retired.

    vijay mogaveera,

Dont talk rubbish if you dont have anything to speak. Messi did his best only to be let down by his team mates. Penalty can go either way. but they should have won in normal time with the amount of chances they had.

most of the guys has same opinion about him as me.pele and his own countrman maradona never considers messi a great or their equal.i consider pele, maradona as great as they won international tournaments for thier nation.messi didnt won a single international trophy for his nation.maradona has won many international trophies for his nation.christiano ronaldo is a far better player than messi.football is a team game.individual brilliance is not enough. you should have the ability to gel with your team mates and synchronize your game according to that which great players like pele and maradona were expert of.germany is a team with great synchronization.all are stars in thier own right in their team.it is treat to watch them play as they look like a hooks of a single chain complementing one another.
