Former Sporting Lisbon striker fails dope test

Rio de Janeiro, Jun 8 (IANS): Palmeiras striker Alecsandro has tested positive for the banned stimulant andarine, the Brazilian club said.

The former Sporting Lisbon player was found to have traces of the drug in his urine after Palmeiras' 1-0 victory over Corinthians on April 3, reports Xinhua.

"We can confirm that a test showed the presence of the prohibited substance," the Sao Paulo club said in a statement on Tuesday.

Andarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator used to build and repair muscle.

Alecsandro will be tested for a B sample in the next seven days, Palmeiras said.

The 35-year-old has scored 154 goals in a 381-match career that has included spells at seven clubs in South America, Europe and Asia.

He represented Portuguese top-flight outfit Sporting Lisbon 25 times in 2006-07, scoring eight goals.
