Jonassen to lead Governor-General's XI against India


Melbourne, Jan 19 (IANS): All-rounder Jess Jonassen will lead a 12-member Governor-General's XI in the only practice match of India's women's cricket tour of Australia which begins on January 22 at the Drummoyne Oval in Sydney.

Following the practice match, India and Australia will play three Twenty20 Internationals and One-Day Internationals (ODI) each. This is the inaugural Governor-General's XI T20 match and is dedicated in the honour of Peter Cosgrove, who is the current Governor-General of Australia.

"This inaugural Governor-General's XI match is a very special occasion on the Australian cricket calendar and will become an important step in our efforts to make cricket the sport of choice for girls and women around the country," Cricket Australia's (CA) Women's National Selection Panel Chairman Shawn Flegler said on Tuesday.

"We have chosen a young, talented squad for this match, led by Jess Jonassen who over the last 12 months has developed into a genuine and match-winning all-rounder."

The Governor-General's XI will assemble in Sydney on Thursday whereby they will attend a reception hosted by the Governor-General at Sydney's Admiralty House.

The squad: Jess Jonassen (captain), Sarah Beard, Holly Ferling, Grace Harris, Delissa Kimmince, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Beth Mooney, Bridget Patterson, Alexandra Price, Molly Strano, Amanda-Jade Wellington.
