Mangaluru/Bhatkal, Jun 17: With the crescent moon being sighted on the night of Wednesday June 17 at Kasargod, the holy month of Ramadan is set to begin from Thursday June 18 across coastal Karnataka.
From Thursday, Muslims will fast from dawn to dusk for the next one month. The holy month culminates with Id-ul-Fitr.
Ramadan will also begin in the Gulf countries and in Kerala simultaneously from June 18.
The official announcement in the district was made by Qazi Twaka Ahmed Musliyar. The Qazi extended Ramadan greetings and urged the community to observe the month with piety and engage themselves in religious activities. Specials night prayers called Taraweeh began in mosques following the annoucement.
In Bhatkal, after a brief conference, the Qazi of Jamatul Muslimeen, Moulana Mulla Mohammed Iqbal Nadwi and the Qazi of Khalifa Jamatul Muslimeen, Moulana Khwaja Madani Nadwi officially declared the start of the month of Ramadan.
Around 80 mosques are there in Bhatkal and in every mosque there will be three to four Hafiz-e-Quran (memorisation of Quran) and the Bhatkali Huffaz would lead the special nights prayers in around Bhatkal, Murdeshwar, Manki and Shiroor.

The UAE Ramadan Moon Sighting Committee has announced that Ramadan in the UAE for the Hijri year 1436 will begin on Thursday, June 18.
Following the committee’s meeting at the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, investigation, application of relevant Sharia laws, and contacts with neighbouring countries, Justice Minister Sultan bin Saeed Al Badi said in a statement that Wednesday June 17, 2015 will be the last day of the Hijri month of Sha’ban of 1436 H. Therefore, Thursday, June 18, 2015, will be the first day of Ramadan.
Al Badi congratulated President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Their Highnesses the Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates, on the advent of the Holy Month of Ramadan, and prayed to Allah Almighty to keep Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed in good health for the sake of his country, Arab Nation and Muslim Nation.

The fasting month of Ramadan will begin on Thursday. Wednesday is the end of the month of Sha’ban, Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday.
In a statement carried by local newspapers, the Saudi Supreme Court said the moon had not been sighted on Tuesday, which means Ramadan will begin on Thursday.
"Tomorrow (Wednesday, June 17) is the end of the month of Sha’ban and Thursday is the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan," the court said.
