Kundapur, Apr 8: Renowned cartoonist Satish Acharya from Kundapur has won the top honours at the national Maya Kamath Memorial Awards Competition-2014 organized recently.
The competition received 91 entries from Indian cartoonists for the Award for Excellence in Political Cartooning, 44 for Best Budding Cartoonist Award and 53 for the Best Foreign Cartoon Award.
Satish Acharya won the top award for Excellence in Political Cartooning for his cartoon on Z-security for Baba Ramdev, followed by Kantesh Badiger of Bengaluru who won the second prize and Rohan Chakravarty, Nagpur who got the third prize in the same category.
The prizes will be distributed on June 6, 2015 at the gallery of Indian Institute of Cartoonists in Bengaluru. An exhibition of selected entries will be displayed on the same occasion.
The first prize for the Best Foreign Cartoon-2014 went to Paolo Dalponte of Italy, and second prize to Behzad Ghafari of Canada.
Leeza John was adjudged Best Budding Cartoonist-2014.
The jury of the MKMA met on April 1 at the Gallery and went through the entries. The competition received entries from all over the world, from countries as far as Serbia, Croatia, Iran, Cyprus, Italy and Macedonia. The quality of the entries was very high, particularly in the international section. The best entries from India were also excellent, original in conception, consummate in craftsmanship.
The jury included noted playwright and actor Girish Karnad, well-known artist S G Vasudev and senior cartoonist B G Gujjarappa.
Satish Acharya, one of the most popular cartoonists in the country, was recently named by the prestigious Forbes Magazine in the list of leading personalities who have spread India's excellence through their imagination and thought processes. His cartoon on Charlie Hebdo attack in France was featured among the most powerful by several international publications. His cartoons regularly appear in several leading media like Mid-Day, Sify, ESPN, City Today and many more.
