Bengaluru: Retd Army officer breaks cordon to help ambulance, assaulted by cop

Bengaluru, Mar 3 (PTI): An ex-serviceman who played a good samaritan was today allegedly assaulted and verbally abused by a traffic Sub-Inspector for making way for an ambulance stuck in a traffic jam at a busy junction here.

The traffic policeman has been suspended pending an inquiry into the incident which was caught on camera, a senior police official said.

The incident happened this afternoon when Nagappa removed a rope at a crowded junction on Bellary road, breaking the cordon to make way for an ambulance carrying blood for an emergency operation at a hospital, as the vehicle was caught in a traffic snarl.

Nagappa said he removed the rope as the ambulance driver requested him to do so and he had the consent from another traffic personnel standing on the other side of the road for the same.

He said as soon as the ambulance moved, the Sub Inspector came from the other side, started abusing him and tried to thrash him and push him around.

Traffic in several parts of the city was thrown out of gear after early morning rains.

Nagappa said the Sub-Inspector has sought apology and he does not want to take the issue any further.

However, DCP Traffic East (Bengaluru) Baburajendra Prasad said an inquiry has been ordered and the Sub-Inspector suspended.

Hats off to the Retd Army officer. Police officers in Bangaluru take it as if it is their right to beat anyone whom they find weak. In the video clip it is clear that the army officer was quiet and the police officer behaving like a maniac. He locked the bicycle, pushed him, hit him on the face. This has been happening in Bangaluru on a regular basis. Either they should be trained to behave properly as per the situation. This pertains not only to Bangaluru but to all the cities in India.

This very same Traffic SI Ganganna would have allowed so called Khadi Clad Neta's in their big SUV's to pass unhindered. Lack of intelligence. Any sane person would have done what the ex serviceman did - allow an Ambulance to pass - this is standard practice. All said and done the CM of Karnataka himself told a popular news channel when asked why his convoy keeps people waiting for 15-20 minutes "Let the people bear it" - heights of arrogance.

No doubt he was an ex-Defense personnel .This courage & helping nature is inculcated in them. I saw that in my father who served in IAF. Having said that we must respect everycitizen and elderly person. Its so becoming a culture in our society that police men can abuse, beat they way they want without even asking reason. What was the need to do that? IF they are so abusive in the public what is the nature of their attitude in police station behind closed doors? First coaching for the police should be behavior & Discipline. In Naggapas case, he serves the nation and thats beatings and abuse for good for nothing cop? what an irony.

For Ambulance driver, life is important. For the cop rule is important. For army officer service to mankind is important. All three are perfect in their thinking.

Was it important to a Police person to abuse the ex service men? When he was pointing to his colleague who gave him permission to do so? the Sr. Police should first inquire then abuse.

Kudos to you Army Officer for coming to the rescue of a patient who was being taken to hospital in an ambulance.

Investigations will reveal the role played by the cop. However if he is found guilty he should be punished severely to serve as a lesson to all who indulge in voilence.

some Police are really thinks they are the world rulers. This fellow instead of starting to mishandling, first should have asked either ambulance personal or the man who opened the rope.instead he had to thrash or assault him ?what a misbehaviour! It is quite ok when they dismissed him.afterall the army man had done as the ambulance People had requested.any way in future it is a lesson to the Police ,not to handle People as he wants.Always first inquire and then handle.Bravo,Nagappa, you reacted right.you resrve our Salute.
