Mangaluru, Feb 22: A 23-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping into an open well at Pilar here on Sunday February 22.
The deceased has been identified as Savita Gatty, daughter of the late Vishwanath Gatty, resident of Pilar.
It is said that Savita went missing from home late night on Saturday February 21. Her family members searched for her but in vain.
Finally, her body was found in a well located in an adjacent plantation belonging to Shreedhar Alva.
Sources said that Savita was lately suffering from mental illness. It is learnt that she had attempt suicide on a previous occasion too.
Sources said that she had studied day and night during her BSc but developed some neurological illness due to which she would frequently get seizures. She was then put on medication and her condition was such that even a day without medicines would bring on attacks. She was forced to discontinue studies and supported her family by doing beedi work along with her mother.
She was the youngest of five daughters, and was unmarried. Among the other four sisters, only the eldest is married.
The family is said to be poor and the house they stay in was reportedly built with the help of locals.
SI Bharati and police personnel arrived at the spot.
Ullal police have registered a case.
