Kolkata, Jan 8: Amid speculation of his comeback to the one-day fold, Sourav Ganguly today said playing in challenging conditions in South Africa would stand him in good stead in the ODIs.

Ganguly, who stood out among the Indian batsmen with an aggregate of 214 runs in his comeback Test series against South Africa, however, did not want to jump the gun vis-à-vis his World Cup chances.

"Obviously playing in conditions like South Africa or Australia always help you in your game. If I get an opportunity in one-day cricket, I think it will help," he told reporters here.

Asked if he was going for the World Cup, the former Indian skipper said, "I do not know. It is still a long way."

Looking back at the 2-1 Test series defeat to the Proteas, Ganguly said the team had indeed lost its "best opportunity" to win a Test series in South Africa.

"It is OK but it was the best opportunity to win a series in South Africa which unfortunately we could not do in the last two days of the game," the Bengal left-hander said.

Ganguly was referring to the lackadaisical approach of the batsmen in the second innings, which shifted the momentum in favour of the hosts who went on to win the series-decider by five wickets.
