Mandya, Dec 18: District superintendent of police (SP), Bhushan G Borase, revealed that an inter-state gang of five thieves, who had stolen 21 kilograms of gold ornaments worth Rs 6 crore from Srinidhi Gold here, stands arrested.
The names of arrested thieves are- Akhnash Sheikh, Khalka Sheikh, Situ Sheikh, Nasrulla Islam and Akramulla.
A person named Amit Singh Bhumik, who allegedly bought gold from these thieves, has also been arrested. The SP disclosed that a nine-member gang had committed the said theft, and that the police are making efforts to arrest the remaining four thieves.
'The policemen from the district, who went to Jharkhand and West Bengal to trace the thieves, faced several challenges, bottlenecks, and dangerous situations. In one incident, a gang of thieves had attacked our policemen. Although their lives were in danger, the team successfully conducted investigation and arrested some people involved with this theft,' The SP explained at a press conference held here on Wednesday December 17.
Borase said that the West Bengal police had fully cooperated with the state police, whereas the extent of support received from Jharkhand police was much below expectations. 'Because of this problem, we could not lay our hands on the remaining thieves. Still, we are continuing with our efforts of gathering information about the remaining thieves, and bring them to book,' he stated.
Borase also explained that a team of ten policemen including deputy superintendent of police, police circle inspectors, and sub-inspectors visited various places in Sahibganj district in Jharkhand and Malda district in West Bengal. 'We have so far been able to recover 366 grams of gold ornaments out of 21 kg ornaments stolen, and Rs 12 lac in cash,' he revealed.
