District health department announces plans to mark ‘World AIDS Day’

Udupi, Nov 30: The District Health and Family Welfare Department organized a press meet on Saturday November 29.

Just like every year, ‘World AIDS Day – 2014’ will be celebrated on Monday December 1 at Government PU College Stadium, Malpe, with the slogan ‘Getting to Zero HIV’ to create public awareness. The event will be held in collaboration with many other government organizations.

According to Surendra Chimbalkar, DHO-in-charge, the WCWD is offering a monthly scholarship of Rs 850 for those under the age of 18 who have been infected and affected by HIV, 50 percent concession in bus fares, as well as home for homeless BPL card holders under Rajiv Gandhi Vasathi Yojana. He said that at present, they have received about 70-80 applications.

Approximately 398 of the general population were HIV positive of which 4 were children. A total of 14 HIV positive cases have been recorded under the ANC population survey in the district upto October. As per the year wise and taluk wise HIV report, up to October 2014, 16,169 of the general population were tested of which 287 were positive, 6,234 of the ANC were tested of which 7 were positive. Nearly 250 cases have been found in the district. On the whole, 14,200 have been tested and 14 cases are of pregnant women.

According to the DHO, ANMS workers used to visit rural houses twice a month. ART services reported that till the year 2014, the total LFU is 33, stopped cases are 33, and missed cases are 8 in Udupi district.

Nithin Shetty, health center authority, said, “About 40 colleges will take part in an informative rally.”

He added that the slogan aims at curtailing spread of the disease, fatality, and stigma of society against infected people.
