Bengaluru, Nov 20: In a first of its kind initiative in the country, Karnataka’s Public Works Department has set up a portal for online registration of contractors and renewals.
The move is aimed at introducing transparency and speed up works.
Each contractor will be issued a smart card instead of a passbook with bio-metric data, photograph and other details, all which will be linked to the portal.
Karnataka’s Public Works Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa said the intiative4 will be a "foolproof and transparent" mechanism to ensure that all works allotted to a contractor.
Talking to reporters after launching the portal, the minister said the time-frame is online and can be monitored.
Smart cards will be issued to Class I and Class II contractors in the first phase and will be extended to others very soon, he added.
