Bangalore, Oct 29: Amidst persisting weaknesses in the economy, job generation in India saw a sharp decline of over 19.9 % during July-September, 2014 over the previous 3-month period, according to ASSOCHAM.
IT, hospitality, infrastructure and aviation reported negative growth as per ASSOCHAM survey of tracking of data posted on different job portals and placements in newspapers.
During July to September 2014, Delhi/NCR emerges as a leading jobs generating centres in India.
However, it recorded a downfall of almost 40 % in terms of jobs generation during July to September 2014 as against April to June 2014.
The city has generated 28,192 jobs during July to September 2014 as against 46,652 jobs during April to June 2014.
According to the data, Bangalore, Mumbai and Chennai jobs have recorded positive growth rate of 8.23 %, 0.05 % and 25.22 % respectively, while Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Kolkata have recorded negative growth rate of 11.38 %, 19.05 %, 6.29 % and 14.61 % respectively during the same period.
The top ten cities that have recorded highest decline in jobs generation during July to September 2014 were Cochin (67.27 %), Nagpur (65.89 %), Dehradun (62.59 %), Gwalior (57.47%), Allahabad (53.47 %), Indore (52.41 %), Meerut (51.93 %), Ranchi (51.52 %), Hoshiarpur (50.34 %), Jalandhar (45.15 %).
Signs of weaknesses in global economy and slow recovery in industrial output in the Indian economy appear to be weighing on the minds of corporates in their hiring plans.
As many as 23 of 32 sectors monitored by the ASSOCHAM Job Data Tracker (AJDT) posted decline in job postings. However, there were a few exceptions like automobiles that showed a healthy expansion of 37.7%.
Worst-hit Sectors
The worst hits were media, insurance, pharma, retail, aviation and FMCG. The media saw a contraction of about 60 % in job postings while the troubled real estate industry reduced hiring by over 75 %.
About 4500 corporates across 32 sectors posted a total of 1.32 lakh jobs during the July to September 2014 period across India as against 1.65 lakh during April to June 2014, reveals the ASSOCHAM findings.
The sourced information primarily from vacancies posted by about 4,500 companies on various job portals, along with advertisements offering employment opportunities published in national and regional newspapers across 56 prominent cities.
While the Information Technology (IT) remains the largest job creator posting 56,200 jobs during July-September 2014, the sector witnessed a drop of 13.2 per cent in vacancies over the previous three months of the year.
The IT industry has been amongst the largest creator of jobs in the globe and similarly in India. The analysis suggests that of late a decline in jobs generation has been seen in leading IT companies such as Nokia, Yahoo, IBM etc. Moreover, bulk hiring seems to be on a downward spiral in the leading domestic IT firms as well.
Among the largest ten jobs generating sectors for the July to September period, only financial services and automobile sector, have recorded positive growth rate as against April to June 2014.
