Goa scraps midday meal egg plan after parental opposition

Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji

Panaji, Oct 13: The Goa government has dropped its plan to include eggs in the midday meal program for schoolchildren after receiving strong opposition from vegetarian parents and students who took part in the pilot run.

The initiative aimed to address malnutrition and protein deficiency but faced backlash due to dietary concerns. Some students refused to eat the meals, and parents, along with teachers, raised objections, citing the importance of respecting vegetarian values.

In response, the government announced it would halt the egg plan and explore alternatives like legumes, nuts, and seeds to ensure adequate nutrition while honouring local dietary preferences. The debate has sparked a broader discussion on balancing nutrition and cultural diversity in school meal programs across India.

A meal to children in school need not include eggs only. When parents and children dont accept it ,make a meal out of Pulses like chana or Moong etc. Potatoes.daal etc.Provided these pulses remain in school canteen ,not reach like rice to other cantines or houses.
