Mangalore, Oct 2: In celebration of World Elders Day on the 1st of October 2014, Global Multispeciality Hospital, 3rd Cross Matadakani Road, Urwa launched the Geriatric Care Unit for the first time in Mangalore. It was inaugurated by Mrs Tulasi Maddineni, CEO, Zila Panchayat, Dakshina Kannada in Global Hospital at 9 Am. The Geriatric Care Unit will cater to the needs of all patients over 60 years of age including nursing care and medical treatment. Packages will be available for basic nursing care and complex medical treatment on a monthly basis. Costs will vary from Rs 15000 per month to Rs 50,000 per month depending on the needs of the patient and the type of room and services selected by the patient. A full assessment will also be conducted to assess the needs of elderly patients before taking them on a long term basis.
While welcoming the distinguished guests and the gathering Dr Sushil Jathanna, Director of Global Hospital said that Geriatric Medicine and Geriatric Care was a well developed speciality and concept in the western world and was gaining increasing importance in India. He said there were at least 10.4 crore senior citizens in India which formed approximatly 8.6% of the population. This was increasing rapidly and by 2016 it is likely to be around 12.4 crores. At present there is no private hospital dedicated to the care of geriatric patients in a Geriatric Care Unit with all the facilities that exist in Global Hospital. He highlighted the increasing problems encountered by senior citizens and said that 50% of senior citizens have more than one condition and their management needs coordinated care. The Geriatric Care Unit will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the patient and look after both the physical and mental health of patients he added.
Tulasi Maddineni welcomed this initiative from Global hospital and highlighted the need to focus on our senior citizens. She said in the past the life expectancy was around 50 years whilst it has now increased to around 68 years due to advances in medical technology and living standards. She said that increasingly older people are left at home on their own as their children live either abroad or in big urban cities of India. She said senior citizens faced many problems including lonliness and urged everyone to do everything possible to help the physical and mental needs of this vulnerable population. It is important that as a society we need to give greater importance to our senior citizens she added. She offered all help from the district administration to empower and enrich the lives of senior citizens of this district.
Mr T.G.Shenoy, Retd DGM of Canara Bank and General secretary of the Senior Citizens Association in Mangalore highlighted the several problems and diseases encountered by senior citizens and gave out a lot of information about the services available to them. He also spoke about several workshops conducted by the Senior Citizens Association of Mangalore and in particular the Comprehensive Geriatric Self assessment Tool that was discussed in a recent workshop conducted by the organization. He welcomed this initiative and wished Global Hospital all success in its new programme.
Smt Amithakala of global hospital led the invocation prayers and Mr Bhasker Arasa proposed the vote of thanks. Mr Ishwar was the MC for the function.

Geriatric care is a well developed speciality in the Western world. Geriatric care is now becoming a fast developing speciality in India too as a result of the ageing population and the breakdown of the nuclear family system. It is projected that with increased life expectancy the population over the age of 60 years is going to rapidly increase. As per the 2011 census, the of senior citizens who are more than 60 years old , is 10.4 crore, which is 8.6% of the population. This figure is likely to increase to 17.3 crores or 12.4% of the total population by 2016. However, until now there is no dedicated facility or hospital in Mangalore to provide the holistic care that patients of this age group needs.
What do we mean by Geriatric Care?

Common diseases
Senior citizens increasingly suffer from complex conditions and often have both communicable and non communicable diseases. The prevalence of TB is higher among the senior citizens compared to the young. Studies have shown that over the age of 60, at least 10% suffer from impaired mobility including osteoarthritis and 10% are hospitalized at any given time. Over the age of 70, more than 50% suffer from one or more chronic conditions. Dementia is an increasing problem in the elderly.
The chronic illnesses include hypertension, coronary heart diseases, respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis and cancers. They also suffer from nutritional and gastrointestinal and genitourinary problems. Dental problems are an increasing problem in the elderly leading to nutritional defeciencies but not always detected. Senior citizens also suffer from visual impairment due to refractive errors or cataracts leading to poor quality of life. Mental health problems encountered by senior citizens include dementia, and mood disorders. Other mental disorders include anxiety, neurosis, drug and alcohol abuse and mental psychosis.
A feature that is less talked about is the abuse of senior citizens. This includes physical, psychological and emotional abuse. Finally loneliness and financial insecurity is a common problem faced by senior citizens.

Facilities available
At Global Hospital we take a holistic and multidisciplinary approach and offer a range of packages for care of the elderly to suit every ones needs. It starts with a thorough needs assessment and the assessment includes a complete physical, mental and medical conditions. The assessment also includes activities of daily living to judge the independence of the patients. This includes their mobility, dressing, feeding and continence. We also conduct visual and sensory tests as impairment of these vitally important sensory functions is quite common amongst senior citizens. Based on the assessment an outpatient or inpatient package is offered either as an out patient package or inpatient package. Food will also be provided as part of the inpatient package.
Future developments
Global hospital is planning to construct two additional floors with studio apartments for senior citizens to replicate home surroundings and enable a homely atmosphere.
