Puttur, Aug 14: Four women, who had visited a house in Pulittadi near Uppinangady in the taluk were handed over to police by villagers, who alleged that the visitors were exerting pressure on the family to get converted to their religion.
The women, who are said to be from Golittottu, had visited a family, which belongs to another religion, in the village.
Several villagers rushed to the spot, accused the women of trying to influence the family members for religious conversion, and laid siege to the house. They then passed on information to the police.
Uppinangady police rushed to the spot and took the women into custody. Suresh Atramajalu, a local panchayat member, accused the women of visiting several houses in Pulittadi, distributing pamphlets relating to their religion, and trying to abet religious conversions. The names of the accused have been given as Shirley, Mini, Leelamma, and Shubha.
It is learnt that the policemen released the women later, after getting bonds executed by them.
