Mangalore, Aug 12: In an incident that posed danger to passersby, especially school children, a heavy branch of a tree uprooted and fell on high tension (HT) wires, bringing down two electric poles with it.

The incident, which caused much incovenience and traffic jam for sometime, happened in front of St Theresa’s School at lower Bendur here on Tuesday evening Aug 12.

The traffic ASI (assistant sub inspector) Rosamma who rushed to the spot took swift measures by deploying barricades for a lane on the two-way route that connects to Bendoorwell junction.

However, the impact was such the HT lines came close to the ground level and were suspended in the air, posing threat to passersby. Traffic was disrupted for almost half-an-hour, Rosamma said.

Speaking to daijiworld, a Mescom official said the department was quick to respond after it learnt about the incident. He said work to clear the uprooted poles was under way and the department would install new poles by 10 pm. The fire brigade too helped in clearing the fallen branch.

On the incident official said the tree that fell on the wires caused the damage. There was no rain and speeding wind during the incident occurred but the incident suggests that the tree was old and branch fell as resultant of incessant rain lashed over a week.

Mangalore is not ready yet for laying underground cable. Where is the place tell me. People are not willing to donate some land for the road extension. If you are owning land and are you willing to donate /gift a few yards for road widening. No man, Mangalore will not see much progress unless people change their old mindset. Do not blame the departments.

Consider felling the trees on the roadsides and broaden the road and make them safe for all, and plant a new sappling to replace the trees that are dangerously hindering the traffic and the human being. Forget about the greens and the environmentalists. They are not mentally sound!

I am wondering why MESCOM is not keen in laying underground cabling system rather than sticking to age old overhead wiring?
By doing so I hope, all the accidents/incidents happening due to tree falling, human touch to the live-wire by mistake etc can be averted. How many accidents/incidents are happening on day to day basis especially during monsoon causing considerable amount of loss, loss of life of the general public and children/students.I request the MESCOM authorities to take some remedial steps taking into consideration all these casualties/problems and put an end for all these nuisances. In foreign countries, you won't find any overhead wiring, cabling, all are underground cabling. Therefore there, accidents of this type are not happening and are very rare.
