Mangalore: Ominous beginning to fishing season - Two drown, three boats capsize

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Aug 12: The first day of the new fishing season, which began on Sunday August 10 after the period of ban placed on deep sea fishing ended, had more bad news than good for the fishermen folk. Three of the fishing boats capsized, several faced turbulence, and one fishermen went missing after falling into the sea while another died.

Jagannath Karkera

Jagannath Karkera (48) from Thota Bangre, who had ventured into the sea with the gill net boat owned by Vinod Chandan on Monday August 11 morning from the estuary here, fell into the Arabian Sea after the boat shook violently due to strong wind. The other fishermen of the boat, Keshava and Devadas, reached the shore safely by this boat. They said they could not rescue Jagannath as huge waves had made this operation impossible.

Sanjeeva (45), a fishermen from Koderi died after a boat turned turtle at Hosahitlu Madi in Kirimanjeshwar village in Kundapur taluk on Monday. After a huge wave whipped the boat in which he and other fishermen were moving, all the fishermen fell into the sea. The fishermen could board the boat again, but Sanjeeva, whose condition had turned serious, breathed last while being brought ashore, it is learnt.

All the ten fishermen of the fishing boat, 'Image' owned by Abdul Aziz from Moodbidri, which drowned about 40 nautical miles off the estuary here were rescued. The boat had started to drown at around 8.45 pm on Sunday, and fishing boats operating nearby rescued the fishermen.

In the meanwhile, the meteorological department has warned fishermen not to enter the sea as wind with a velocity of 45 to 55 km per hour is expected to blow through Karnataka coast during the next 24 hours.

Wearing PFDs or Life Jacket is a must for those travelling by any watercraft. Any excuse against it is not acceptable at all.
One time people used to resent wearing car belts but now after enforcement they are wearing it without any hitch. Here also it needs enforcement and a day shall come everybody shall accept it without a hitch.

    Good suggestion.
These poor fishermen not known what is life jacket and how to wear it. First Govt. should provide a free life jacket to every fishermen and after that make them to wear life jackets compulsory.
