Bantwal: Revenue officials demolish thatched hut, face ire of locals

Daijiworld Media Network – Bantwal (SP)

Bantwal, Jul 18: The revenue officials, on Wednesday July 16, razed a thatched hut built by a poor couple here, alleging that they had built the hut in government land. This act came in for bitter criticism of several locals. The hut, belonging to Raghu Poojary and Soumya couple, is located at Kanjilakody in Maderigudde near Lorettopadavu here. The couple is very poor, and works for a firm in the town which rents out Shamiana and other paraphernalia.

The couple has been living in this hut since some time. Accusing the couple of encroaching government land, revenue inspector, Sadhu, and local village accountant, took steps to demolish this hut, it is alleged.

The hut was demolished when the couple was away on work. Raghu Poojary and his wife came to know of the incident only after they came home in the evening. Locals however, strongly supported the couple, and stood by them. A team of local youth reconstructed the demolished structure at the same place on Wednesday night.

The officials, who learnt about the above incident, visited the spot again on Thursday morning to raze the hut again, but the locals stopped them from doing so. They questioned the officials about their inaction with regard to several other illegal huts standing in the area, and why they were allowed to continue.

The team of officials, sensing trouble, went back after clicking some photographs of the re-built structure, it is gathered.

I would request the same 'shameless' "authorities" to go and inspect the huge "craters" created by multiple laterite stone cutting sites and steep dangerous excavations from hill to ground level (realty cartel), extra heavy duty vehicles (industrial) regularly plying on small village roads, caring three hoots of the laws of the land????? WHY ARE THEY NOT TAKING ANY ACTION THERE????

Although it is illegal to encroach on Govt. land, the issue is there are so many illegal activities going on in that area like large scale laterite stone cutting, deep excavations and land leveling, hacking of forests, extra heavy duty vehicles plying in the small interior roads etc., which nobody is bothered about as those involved in such activities have the capacity to grease the palms of the regulators!! Here the law of the land is applicable only for the poor and downtrodden, not for rich and powerful!! Jai Hind!!

Very sad to see this. But it is not allowed to build a house in govt. land. People want to help them, rent a house and help them to pay the rent.

    Government Land = Peoples Land
When governments are there to govern for a few years, people who elected them are not slaves of the government.
Government has responsibility to distribute land or resources equally rather than rewarding the rich & powerful for their encroachment of government land while punishing the poor or powerless.

Rules and regulations are required. But "humanity" should be the master of all rules. Please don't hurt the poor who don't have houses. Rather find out why they are living in Government land and help them through government schemes.

Because the particular piece of land in question is, may be, needed by one of the Revenue official or a local politician.
People should unite the way they did in this case and thwart these guttersnipes from doing whatever they want...
Next time they should catch and make them never return there with their greedy faces.
These officials are never bothered of acres of Government land being encroached\transferred illegally by officials\politicians\ministers as they are paid well for their silence and also fear for their position\job.
They can show high-handedness\ attack\bring misery to only poor people.
Although I do not approve of anyone taking over\using Govt. Land without authorization, when these authorities themselves turn a blind eye on bigger land grabbing, why shouldn't they turn a blind eye on this kind of instances?

    Fight for Justice...

State Government on one side speaks of housing scheme for poor, while on other side demolish the existing house in the name of 'illegal construction'. More worrying is of the destruction of poor peoples house. In Someshwara route from Ullal, we can see many house remaining unfinished over 15 years constructed under Ashraya scheme for poor by the then MLA U T Fareed. Wasting of money on one hand, & demolishing of structures like this on other hand.

Shame on us...These heartless officials acted for not getting bribe money and should businessman or politician do the same will they take such action. There are lot of encroachments in every village by powerful people and they were not touched because of money power.Present able DC of DK requested to reach out these voiceless couple and those involved in the razing of hut should be taken in to task with punitive measure. If this site occupied as required by AKRAMA SAKRAMA regulations it could be regularized easily in 94C form.On one hand Govt of Karnataka tries it's best to provide 'SOORU ILLADAVARIGE SOORU'and in the same time concerned officials razes temp huts !!What a shame.

This is double standard by the officials by allowing other huts to stay.

At the same time building huts is a big scam where half a dozen members of the family come out and build illegal house on government property to gradually make it their own under 'akrama- sakrama' scheme.
