Mangalore, Jun 1: The SAS (self-assessment scheme) was the center of discussion during the first session of the general meeting held in the MCC Netravati conference hall, chaired by mayor Mahabala Maarla here on Saturday, May 31.
The Congress had earlier, at the time of Lok Sabha elections, assured that there would be no increment in self-assesment property tax, still there has been a hike of 15 percent. People are confused about this issue, alleged the BJP members.
In response, mayor Mahabala Maarla promised to convene another special meeting to discuss issues related to SAS and clear all the doubts and allegations.
Various questions with regard to the increment of tax were raised by the BJP members and confusion and chaos followed during the meeting. Responding to the questions, the mayor said, "The tax was increased by the district administration, and not by us (Congress) when electoral code of conduct was in place. Hence, a proper investigation will be done and the matter will be studied to clear all doubts and misunderstandings."
A BJP member questioned about the total assets available with the MCC and the total amount collected by the MCC in the form of tax. Responding to this, the mayor said Ajith Kumar Hegde Shanady, the MCC commissioner will hold a meeting with the regional officers, revenue inspectors and other officials and a ward wise figure will be ascertained. A clear target will also be set for revenue collections, he added.
With regard to taking financial aid from the KUIDFC and the state finance committee, the majority of the members supported the decision to take funds from those committees for the underground drainage works in the city.
Action against illegal traders
"Some street vendors and footpath vendors have been illegally carrying out their trades, creating nuisance to commuters and the neighbourhood. Some have been selling fruits in STD booths too," said a member.
In response, the MCC commissioner promised to take strict action against those who break the rules. He also said that banners and buntings will be removed as they mar the beauty of the city.
