Mangalore, May 29: The MCC health officials on Thursday May 29 made a surprise visit to the restaurants in the city to inspect the cleanliness and the health of workers. By the end of the operation, out of eight restaurants, four were issued notices.

The team lead by Dr A Manjayya Shetty, environmental engineer S M Madhu, Yashwanth and Karunakar inspected several restaurants.

The officials first visited Indra Bhavan at Balmatta and after inspection, issued a notice for not fulfilling requirements as stipulated by the health department.

Speaking to daijiworld, Dr A Manjayya Shetty said "The kitchen (of Indra Bhavan) is not clean, the vessels were left open with houseflies swarming around. Even the roof was unclean, and there was no hot water facility for the customers. Workers are not provided with health cards and the refrigerator was not clean. Phenyle was not used for cleaning tables."

Later, environment engineer S M Madhu issued a notice to the hotel to fulfil all the requirements within a week. He also said that he would visit again and take further action if the hotel fails to meet the expected standards within the deadline.

The officials then visited Hotel New Swagath, and noted that it was clean and tidy. They next visited SCS hospital canteen and noticed that the roof was open at some parts and suggested the canteen owner to cover the open areas with net and also said to tile the floor which was in a state of disrepair.

Other restaurants like Hao Hao, Dolphin Bar and Restaurant, and Hotel Shivbagh were given clean chit while Hotel Shuchi, Hotel Ruchi were issued one week's notice.

First of all there should be written guidelines to the hotel owners and the employees. Secondly these so called inspections which take place once in a blue moon are neither effective nor successful. There should be special team to conduct these surprise checks frequently (and NOT with advance notice as it happens sometimes)and throughout the year and the punishment should be severe. Otherwise this will remain just a Natak for publicity. Further it is needless to invite the press and pose for photographs. Just do your job guys. I wish MCC officials and their bosses read these comments and act accordingly.

First of all, MCC should come out with a CD etc., where it is clearly explained through visuals, what it means to have a clean facility, and what are the rules. This the hotel owners can use to train their staff!

But as usual MCC will harp they have no funds to invest in something like this! Look at the pictures taken above. The MCC officials themselves are walking into the kitchens without hairnets and with half-sleeve shirts! Everybody who works or walks in a kitchen should have a full sleeve shirt and hairnets, otherwise, body hair / dandruff etc. can fall into food! And, we Indians are very hairy people (like gorillas), and not smooth like Chinese! Even in Singapore, even street hawkers wear hairnets, or at least cover their hair while cooking food to their customers.

If the restaurant does not have hairnets, the MCC should PURCHASE hairnets and their staff should go about inspecting kitchens with the proper attire. When the restaurant owner finds that the MCC officials are serious about their job, then the owner too will take responsibility for his kitchen cleanliness.

    Train the Trainers first!

What are the guidelines ? Are they communicated to hoteliers/restaurant owners. Whether the bureaucrats are trained about food safety ?
What are the mandatory test(medical) for food handlers ? What is the frequency of test ?
The debate/discussion need to be on. How often they are checked ?Otherwise it will be typical Babugiri.

Only inspecting 5 , 6 hotels not enough. There are so many hotels , you dont even get clean water in clean glass. Some hotels you dont even dare to enter , full of dust on floor , tables and kitchen. Please issue some guideline to hotel owners before starting hotel business or shut down the business. Common people suffer due to dirty atmosphere. 50 percent population of Mangalore fall sick eating hotel and outside foods.

Please make kitchen viewable for customers. By glass barrier. It would give clean picture to customers daily. Rather than officials visiting in intervals.

Unclean hotels should be shut down for a week to comply with the requirements. They should be allowed to re-open only after the inspection by the concerned authorities.

It is the responsibility of the Health officials to make sure all the eateries are clean and in compliance with rules and regulations. If not, the concerned officials should also get a write up.

MCC should hire more Health Inspectors to conduct the inspections routinely at least once in a month.

A question to MCC officials. How about inspecting road side food vendors and eateries where more people eat than in restaurants in mangalore city. Come and have a look under kuntikan fly which is in pathetic condition There are at least 6 to 7 eateries here and no provision of water and sanitary facilities and more than 100 to 200 people eat this food on daily basis from early morning till late night because probably because it is cheaper. Be our guests welcome to kuntikan junction. I see them attending natures call and go back and serve food without washing their hands. So dirty !!! Not just here but there are many more in mangalore were there is no respect for hygiene and cleanliness.

This is at least going to make the restaurants wake up and be aware of the hygiene part of their business .Repeated raids will make them a bit better than before ,most of the time they get away by 'other' negotiations with the officials. Also the public should be made aware of by campaigns by the authorities,so that complaints about cleanliness be noticed.

Khaders initiative is working. Hotels should take these notices in right spirit and should implement hygiene standards for the good of their customers who is source of the income. Such inspections should extend to Udupi and other cities.

Thanks MCC..... now we know which restaurants to avoid. I am glad that my fav Hao Hao & Dolphin are rated as clean and hygenic.

Restaurants in Mangalore need to introduce stainless steel wall kitchen. (Hotel owners who have no idea what this is...please check on google.)and for god's sake, please give your waiters and cooks a Occupational Heath card, its been made mandatory in all major cities and tourist destinations.
