Puttur, May 23: The Puttur rural police have succeeded in thwarting an attempt to illegally transport and sell precious diamond stones by a gang of four.
The police arrested the four accused red-handed on Wednesday May 21 night at Aryapu in Santyar, while they were taking the diamonds to another place by car. The police also recovered diamonds from them.
The arrested are Ajmal Pasha (23) from Mysore's K R Nagar, Shakoor alias Abdul Shakoor (24) from Puttur, Isubu (24) from Sarve, Puttur, and Azeez K E (43), a resident of Belya, Sullia.
They were produced in court on Thursday May 22 and sent to judicial custody.
Acting on credible information that precious diamonds were being transported in a car, the rural police led by SI Jagadish Reddy began checking vehicles at Santyar. The police found the diamonds in a red Maruti 800 car that came from Sullia.
On questioning, the four accused gave unsatisfactory and contradictory answers. They were then taken to the police station and subjected to further interrogation, during which they reportedly said that they had planned to sell the precious diamond stones to a person from Chitradurga at Puttur.
Sampya police registered a case against the four accused.
