Sullia, Dec 26: Make hay while the sun shines, goes the saying, and some of them do follow it, unfortunately for the wrong reasons.
A lorry driver whose job it was to transport rice meant for Akshara Dasoha mid-day meals from the godown, was on Wednesday 25 caught with the help of the locals for selling the rice.
The rice was being sold while being transported from the main godown of the department of food and civil supplies in Mangalore to the godowns of the department at Arambooru in Sullia. It is suspected that the illegal sale was going on for some time.
The lorry driver, Basavaraju (55) from Hubli, used to allegedly sell the rice meant for Akshara Dasoha to shops and restaurants.
The locals complained about Basavaraju to Radhakrishna Parivarakana, president of Aletti gram panchayat, who in turn caught the culprit red-handed while he was unloading the rice at a restaurant at Gandhinagar in Sullia. The president informed the block education officer who then complained to the police.
The police arrived at the spot and arrested Basavaraju.
The lorry is said to be belonging to a person at Bellare and the driver was employed there for the last ten years.
A case has been registered in Sullia police station.
