Mangalore, Oct 21: Mahaveer Circle is one of the most prominent circles in the city. Though it was named Mahaveer Circle a few years ago, it is still recognized and called Pumpwell Circle by most. This is the prime circle that connects the city with two major national highways, NH 66 Panvel to Kochi and NH 48 Mangalore to Bangalore.
The reconstructed circle has a huge ‘Kalasha’ in the centre, surrounded by green landscaping and is maintained by the Karnataka Bank. Till date, the circle has been maintained well, but the nuisance is in the way it is used on occasions.
Quite a few associations tie flags, buntings, and banners on the Circle and the fail to clean it up properly. Remains of banners, buntings, and flags tend to remain there along with threads and ropes. Some even paste bills around the Circle, which damage it to a certain extent.
Another problem is that there is an MCC dustbin near the Circle, which again gives it an unhygienic feel. Two lorries that belong to the MCC for transporting waste are found parked near the circle most of the time.
At times lorries ferrying fish tend to park in the surroundings at night and let their waste water gather there. This leaves behind foul smell for some days. This has been occurring over the past few days. This, in turn, affects the people who pass by this Circle daily and also poses risk of deadly diseases to the residents of the area.
Earlier, there were a few fast food shops near the Circle which were later cleared off by the MCC. But while there were shops there, there was no problem with relation to hygiene. It is extremely essential to take prominent steps to see that the present problems are solved in order to maintain the true heritage of this place, so it may be called the ‘Gateway of Mangalore’.
